Today we’d like to introduce you to Shanah Grant.
Hi Shanah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
As a child in Jamaica, I can remember, as young as 4 years old, getting excited to play the banker with my friends in our imaginary “store game.” With leaves as money, I would be sure to give the correct change to everyone who visited the store. Moments like this set the precedence for mathematics to make me the entrepreneur I am today. While growing up, my grades in math were never below 95%. Not only was I good at math, I quickly realized I had a gift for helping others overcome their fear of it and grow to excel in it.
I helped my peers throughout school and tutored during college and graduate school. While tutoring, I saw the huge gap in knowledge that many students faced. Deep down, I knew tutoring wasn’t enough—I felt called to do more. That calling led me to pursue a doctorate with a focus on teaching math, so I could better support students and coach math tutors and teachers.
Though I never saw entrepreneurship firsthand in my family, I recognized a pressing need for math tutors who could make math relatable, understandable, and empowering—especially for students who had been left behind by traditional systems. That’s how Sharpe Sessions was born. It wasn’t a choice—it was a necessity. We’ve become a safe space where students can learn from their mistakes, build confidence, pass milestone exams, and get into their dream schools, often on full-ride scholarships.
But math was just one piece of the puzzle. Over time, I realized that even as students began excelling in math, the larger issue of financial literacy was still being ignored. In my research and lived experiences, I saw just how wide the wealth gap is—and how early it starts. I’ve always been passionate about money, and I knew I needed to do something about it. That passion led me to write A Toolkit for Raising Wealthy Kidz, a guide designed to help parents and families teach their children the foundations of building wealth.
We’ve since expanded our mission at Sharpe Sessions to not only build strong math students but also to educate families on financial literacy. We teach everything from saving and investing to generational wealth-building strategies. Because to us, wealth is not a privilege—it’s a right. And we believe that by empowering students with both academic confidence and financial knowledge, we’re setting them up for lifelong success.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like most businesses, the road hasn’t been completely smooth—there have definitely been ups and downs. We originally started in person, but when the pandemic hit, we had to quickly pivot to a virtual model. At the time, it was a challenge, but in hindsight, it became a blessing in disguise. Going virtual allowed us to expand our reach and now we’re able to serve students not just locally, but across the country and even internationally.
One of the biggest challenges we continue to face is access to capital. Without adequate funding, it’s difficult to hire and retain a strong team, invest in robust curriculum development that drives even greater student success, and market our services effectively so we can grow and scale our impact.
Despite these challenges, we’ve remained committed to our mission—and what keeps us going is the transformation we see in our students every day. We’re building something meaningful, and while the journey hasn’t always been easy, it’s absolutely been worth it.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Sharpe Sessions?
At Sharpe Sessions, we’re on a mission to bridge the wealth gap — and we believe it starts with math confidence. Math is the foundation of problem-solving, critical thinking, and financial literacy — skills that open doors to opportunity and long-term success. That’s why we’re dedicated to making math accessible, enjoyable, and empowering for every student we serve.
Sharpe Sessions is a virtual math tutoring company that helps students overcome their fear of math by changing the way they approach it. We create an engaging environment where students connect with math, love it, and grow with it. With math progress now at its lowest level in over two decades, our mission has never been more essential. Through our personalized tutoring and Bringing Math to Life curriculum, we help students not only boost their grades but also build the confidence to thrive.
We specialize in one-on-one virtual math tutoring for grades 1–12 and college and are highly sought after for our SAT Math Prep Program, which has helped students earn outstanding scores and secure spots — often fully funded — at their dream universities, including Duke, Cornell, Georgia Tech, Emory, and Howard.
Our “Let’s Talk Numbers” workbook series brings math to life for children ages 3–14 through fun, hands-on activities, while our financial literacy series empowers older students and professionals to make smart money moves and build wealth. This allows us to extend our impact beyond the classroom into the real world — transforming not just academic success, but financial futures.
In just seven years, Sharpe Sessions has worked with over 250 students across 12 states and 4 countries, helping them go from frustrated to fearless in math.
What sets us apart is simple: we don’t just teach math — we teach confidence, create opportunity, and plant the seeds of generational wealth. We are most proud of seeing our students earn admission into their dream schools—fully funded. Graduating debt-free positions them in a whole new income bracket, setting the stage for generational wealth and giving them the freedom to pursue their biggest dreams without financial burden.
At Sharpe Sessions, we don’t just prepare students for the next test — we prepare them for life.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I like best about Atlanta is that it’s truly a city of opportunities for everyone. The energy, innovation, and entrepreneurial spirit here make it an exciting place to grow a business and connect with people. What I like least — or find most challenging — is that, while opportunities abound, breaking through barriers to reach more people and expand your business can be difficult, requiring creativity, persistence, and the right connections.
