Today we’d like to introduce you to Kandus Johnson.
Hi Kandus, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been creating for as long as I can remember. My dad used to draw cool muscle cars and monsters all the time when I was a kid and I was mesmerized by them. He definitely inspired me and passed his talent onto me. I’ve always been fascinated with making things that do not exist. My work is a combination of my imagination and the world around me. I sell my art almost every weekend at a wide variety of festivals and I also have my work in numerous stores.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being a full-time artist during Covid was one of the hardest obstacles I’ve had to face with my career. Markets were nonexistent, commissions were scarce and life was a little hectic. There’s always ups and downs, but the most important thing is to never give up. No one is going to hand you your dream; you’ve got to be willing to do the dirty work. Keep going!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a mixed media artist. My main focus is woodworking but I also love drawing with pen and ink. I enjoy making weird characters that make people smile. I have a whimsical, colorful style. I’ve recently been enjoying making 3D layered wood pieces where I build my own world and characters. I’ve been working small lately but I have plans on creating bigger pieces and characters!
How do you define success?
Success as an artist isn’t defined solely by fame or fortune—it’s about creating work that resonates with others and stays true to your vision. It means growing creatively, finding your voice, and connecting with an audience, whether that’s one person or thousands. Ultimately, success is making art that matters—to you and to someone else.
