Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordy Byrd Sr..
Hi Jordy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Since the 2000s I’ve had an interest in fashion design, art, creating music and music videos. Before I ever picked up a camera, I used to create logos, flyers, airbrush clothes & shoes as a side hustle. My passion for music lead me to producing my own beats & recording songs with my brother & friends. I eventually decided to go back to school to acquire a skilled trade. I graduated with a 4.0 GPA from Omni Technical institute back in 2010 where I studied Audio engineering & Information Technology. I spent years learning programs like Adobe Illustrator, Pro Tools, Fruity Loops, Reason, & Logic Pro. After using recording software for so many years, the video editing software was not a steep learning curve. Most of the functionality & graphical interface is nearly identical. I taught myself the basics of photography/videography with a combination of real world experience & Youtube tutorials. I started using a cheap Nikon in 2017 (my mom helped me buy it lol) shooting mostly family. After a few years I upgraded to a GH5 and a DJI drone. My photoshop skills were nowhere as polished as they are today, but the practice over the years really helped me! People seem to be surprised when I tell them I shoot everything with manual focus. No way I am knocking autofocus, but from experience, you get more control over your shots. I really enjoy my current setup using a Panasonic Lumix, with cinema lenses.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting off as a photographer was difficult because it’s a very specific skill set to develop. You have to really learn your gear and know how to set your camera, lighting, and subjects to get predictable results. I had to do a number of test shoots, and client shoots until I was comfortable enough to start charging a fee. During this time, my wife was very straightforward when my shooting needed work which helped me develop my skills. Maybe the hardest year that I’ve had running this business was during covid in 2020. There weren’t many shoots and everything was closed down. That year taught me how to prepare for a slow season.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My specialty is creating video marketing material for businesses and products/brands. I am also known for covering many different types of events in and around the city. I also enjoy working on films, and music videos. I am proud of the fact that I am able to rely on my family to help me with video shoots. The one thing that sets me apart is that I believe in building lasting relationships especially with my clients by providing a truly great customer experience. Every shoot is important because the end product reflects on the image of my company.
