Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Dupsie’s is an Black-owned African fashion family business that was founded in Nigeria by Eunice Onabanjo in 1989 after completing a course in fashion at Central School of fashion, Foley St, London, in the United Kingdom. Eunice had always had a passion for fashion ever since she was a little girl. This was evident in the way she dressed, accessorized her outfits, and carried herself. Often times, while her friends go shopping for clothing, she’ll go shipping for fabrics, sketch, and boom another masterpiece. She had an eye for fashion which made her always stand out. The potency of this passion unsurprisingly extended to family members which in turn thrust Dupsie’s into a household name in African fashion.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Every business has its challenges. We are not an exception.
The influx of inferior “African” fashion from Asia has been unhelpful in educating the public about African culture, African fashion, and traditions..
We have experienced unauthorized uses of our intellectual property by vendors from Asia over the years which is still the case. Even though we have been successful in stopping some of these bad actors over the years, there are still many at large.
