Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey into esthetics wasn’t straightforward, but it’s one I’m incredibly grateful for.
After high school, I went to college mainly because it’s what my parents wanted for me. Deep down, I knew it wasn’t where my heart was. During the pandemic, everything changed — I moved out, started working different jobs just to make ends meet, but nothing ever felt fulfilling. I knew I wanted more.
One day, during a conversation with my sister, we talked about me moving back home so I could save money and finally do something I loved. Around that time, I had become obsessed with Dr. Pimple Popper videos. Something about extractions and caring for the skin fascinated me — that’s when it clicked. I realized I wanted to become an esthetician.
I enrolled in esthetics school in 2021, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I loved learning about skin health, the science behind treatments, and connecting with clients & others who shared my passion.
After graduating, though, I hit a wall. I struggled with procrastination, self-doubt, and laziness. I kept putting off my state board exam — not because I wasn’t capable, but because I didn’t believe in myself. Three years passed before I finally decided to take action.
The turning point came after a night out when I fell asleep at the wheel while driving. Thankfully, I walked away without a scratch. That moment changed everything. I saw it as a graceful wake-up call from God — a reminder that He had more planned for me. It pushed me to strengthen my faith and take control of my life.
Not long after, I finally took my state board exam — and passed both the written and practical on my first try. That moment of victory felt like everything had come full circle.
I started working at a men’s-only salon to gain hands-on experience, but I quickly realized I wanted to build something of my own — a place where people could feel comfortable, confident and cared for. That’s when Skynned Esthetics Salon was born.
Now, I’m focused on growing my business, building my brand, and helping my clients love their skin.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the biggest obstacles along my journey was learning how to push through distractions, procrastination, and self-doubt. There were times when I knew exactly what I needed to do but couldn’t bring myself to do it. I let fear and overthinking convince me that I wasn’t ready or good enough. I struggled to stay consistent and motivated, and the longer I waited, the harder it became to believe in myself. On top of that, I was dealing with financial problems that made everything feel even heavier. There were moments when I wondered if I’d ever be able to afford to chase my goals or invest in myself the way I needed to. During that same period, I also lost a lot of friends, which made things even more difficult. It felt like people I had always been there for were no longer there for me. That lack of support in my personal life made me question whether anyone would support me professionally. But over time, I realized that not everyone is meant to understand your vision. I had to learn how to be my own biggest supporter and trust that the right people would show up when the time was right. Those challenges — emotional, mental, financial and overall spiritual — tested me, but they also built my faith, discipline, and resilience, which now drive everything I do as a business owner.
