Hi Chris W., we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
People often ask me “how long I’ve been the Men’s Style Concierge..?” I started TMSC brand in 2012 but I’ve been fly all my life. My style was influenced first by my father and my oldest brother (I’m the last of five boys). My dad always dressed in suits to church growing up. And my brother was the coolest dressed person I knew as a kid…he’s 9 years older than me.
In 2012 I began posting men’s looks and style on Pinterest and Instagram. That grew into establishing relationships with companies like GQ Magazine and Macy’s over 2 or 3 years as I began doing personal styling and shopping for clients. That morphed into opportunities to do public speaking engagements talking about men’s style & fashion. I also made pocket rounds and lapel flowers to help clients add a little pop to their suited looks.
Now I am more selective of the clients I work with.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Working for yourself is never a smooth road… I’ve had to build TMSC brand from nothing and that’s difficult. The hardest part about building a company like image consulting and personal styling is attracting clients that can afford your services. You wouldn’t believe how many men want and need the help but don’t always see the value of using a style expert. Also, not having an actual storefront with my own products (shirts, suits, shoes, ties, etc.) can be a struggle because men wanted to shop directly from me starting out…and I had to clearly communicate that they would pay me to shop, style, and consult with them. Meaning, they paid for my expertise as I sourced the actual pieces from multiple stores, boutiques, tailors, and online. Lastly, a main struggle for me was changing my mentally on providing guidance to clients not only from what I’d wear personally to what made sense for the client (meeting the client where they were presently).
