Today we’d like to introduce you to Mirembe Beddings And Curtains.

Hi Mirembe Beddings and, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Founder’s Story – Nagawa Irene (Mirembe)

I started Mirembe Beddings and Curtains in 2020, right from my small home in Kampala. At the time, I had very limited resources — just a sewing machine, a strong passion for interior design, and a deep belief that Ugandans deserved high-quality, locally made home décor.
My journey wasn’t easy. I came from humble beginnings and faced many challenges, especially as a young woman trying to build a brand in an industry dominated by imported products. But what kept me going was the dream of creating décor that reflected our culture, our colors, and our comfort. I wanted every Ugandan home to feel beautiful — not because of imported luxury, but because of creativity and craftsmanship born right here.
I began by sewing bed sheets and curtains for friends and neighbors. Their reactions inspired me — they loved the designs, the colors, and the personal touch. Soon, word spread, and what started as a small hustle grew into a full business: Mirembe Beddings and Curtains.
Over time, I built a team of skilled local tailors and designers. Together, we expanded our collections to include bedding, curtains, carpets, and full interior décor packages. The brand has since grown beyond Kampala, reaching homes, hotels, and corporate offices across Uganda — and even receiving orders from Kenya and Rwanda.
What I’m most proud of is not just the business growth, but the impact we’ve made. We’ve trained young women in tailoring and business management, helping them start their own ventures. For me, success isn’t only about sales — it’s about inspiring others to believe that they, too, can build something beautiful from nothing.
Today, when I look at how far we’ve come, I’m reminded that Mirembe Beddings and Curtains is more than a business — it’s a story of resilience, creativity, and faith. And it’s only the beginning.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all — the journey has been full of challenges, lessons, and growth.
When I started Mirembe Beddings and Curtains in 2020, I had very limited capital and no formal business background. I remember sewing with a single machine in my living room, balancing between delivering customer orders and learning how to manage finances, suppliers, and marketing all at once. Many times, I faced delays in material supply, especially during the COVID-19 lockdowns, and there were moments I almost gave up.
Another major challenge was earning trust in a competitive market. Most customers preferred imported décor, assuming local products were of lower quality. Convincing people that Ugandan-made bedding and curtains could meet international standards required consistency, creativity, and visible results. I had to prove the quality of my work through every product delivered.
As a young woman entrepreneur, I also faced skepticism and limited access to funding. Many people doubted that décor could become a serious business, but I used that doubt as motivation to keep improving and growing. I learned to manage every setback as part of the journey — from sourcing affordable materials to training a reliable team that shared my vision.
Through all those struggles, what kept me going was faith, passion, and the positive feedback from my clients. Every happy customer reminded me why I started: to bring comfort, color, and class into Ugandan homes. Today, those early struggles have shaped my resilience and strengthened the foundation of Mirembe Beddings and Curtains.

As you know, we’re big fans of Mirembe Beddings and Curtains . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?

Beyond business, we stand for empowerment and community growth. I’ve trained and employed young women and youth in tailoring and business management, helping them build sustainable livelihoods. Our workshops are not just about sewing — they’re about creating opportunity and pride in local craftsmanship.
I want readers to know that Mirembe Beddings and Curtains isn’t just a décor brand — it’s a symbol of homegrown excellence. Every piece we make carries a story — the story of Uganda’s creativity, resilience, and beauty. Our goal is to make every home feel warm, elegant, and proudly African.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
On Finding Mentors and Networking

Yes — mentorship and networking have played a big role in my journey. When I started Mirembe Beddings and Curtains, I didn’t have formal business training or a strong network. I had to learn through observation, experience, and by surrounding myself with people who had walked the path before me.
My advice to anyone looking for a mentor is to start with genuine relationships, not just titles. Look for people who inspire you not only because of their success, but because of their values, work ethic, and willingness to guide others. A mentor doesn’t always have to be famous or in your exact industry — sometimes, the best mentorship comes from people who simply believe in your vision and challenge you to think bigger.
For me, networking grew naturally from showing up — attending business events, trade fairs, women entrepreneur forums, and even online communities. I learned that when you’re passionate about what you do, people notice. Your work becomes your introduction.
One thing that has worked well for me is offering value before expecting help. When I meet other business owners or designers, I focus on learning from them and finding ways we can collaborate or support each other. That approach has helped me build genuine connections that have opened doors — from media exposure to partnerships and mentorship.
Finally, I always remind young entrepreneurs that your consistency attracts mentorship. When people see your effort, dedication, and growth, they’re more willing to invest time in you. So even when it feels like no one is noticing, keep doing your best — your work will speak for you.
