Conversations with Kelsey MacMinn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey MacMinn.

Hi Kelsey, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My photography journey didn’t start in some fancy studio — it started in my living room, chasing my kids around with a camera that I barely knew how to turn on. I just wanted to freeze the little moments — the messy hair, the belly laughs, the real stuff that disappears too fast.

Somewhere along the way, those snapshots turned into storytelling. I fell in love with capturing people exactly as they are — not posed or perfect, but real. What began as me documenting my own chaos turned into a career helping other families, couples, and dreamers tell their stories too.

Now, years later, I’ve built Kelsey MacMinn Photography around connection, comfort, and creativity. I want every session to feel like hanging out with an old friend — just one who happens to have a really good eye for golden light.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Let’s just say it has not been a straight road — more like a winding trail with a few flat tires and wrong turns.
There were years of self-doubt (“Who’s going to pay me to do this?”), late nights editing after my kids went to bed, and plenty of moments where I questioned if I was really cut out for entrepreneurship. Learning to balance creativity with the business side was a whole other beast — invoices and taxes aren’t nearly as fun as sun flares and laughter.

But every stumble taught me something. The struggle made me scrappy. And the more I leaned into my weird, intuitive, storytelling side — the more my work started to click (pun very much intended).

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in lifestyle and portrait photography — the kind that feels alive and tells a story. I’m known for my ability to make people comfortable in front of the camera, to pull genuine emotion out of ordinary moments, and to make real life look just a little bit cinematic.

What sets me apart? I’m not chasing trends. I’m chasing truth. My sessions are full of laughter, movement, chaos, and warmth — I want every photo to feel like a memory you can step back into.

What I’m most proud of isn’t a single photo or award — it’s the trust people give me to capture their lives honestly. Every time someone says, “That’s so us,” I know I’ve done my job right.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
The quality that’s carried me the farthest is empathy — being able to read people, meet them where they are, and help them see how beautiful that place really is. I think creativity flows best when people feel safe being themselves.

That, and I don’t take myself too seriously. A little humor goes a long way — whether it’s calming a nervous couple, getting a kid to smile, or reminding myself that perfection isn’t the goal — connection is.
