Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasimine Smith.
Hi Jasimine, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m a Professional Makeup Artist with 11+ years of experience,Owner of Jasimine Jhai Beauty.Servicing girls all through out Atlanta but primarily the Gwinnett Area. I found my love for makeup years ago back in high school when a friend of mine Maegan Roberts who is doing her thing in New York as a makeup artist for NYFW right now; she would come to class almost everyday with a beat face and I’m like how does this girl have time do her makeup this early before school, so every day in class I would ask her what products she would use and how she did certain things and the love for makeup just grew from there. I started buying the same products she had, we would practice on each other etc. I would watch countless videos of makeup on YouTube and practice on friends and family members at the time. By that time I was in college at the illustrious University by the Sea Savannah University #hailssu. When I got there I started doing girls makeup on campus for a way to earn money as a broke college student and still learning and perfecting my craft. After college I came back home and started dibbling and dabbling in other things like hair and nails even lashes but I just had more love for makeup so I really wanted to hone in on that, and that’s what I did. Living in ATL presents so many opportunities you just have to put yourself out there or know the right people and in my case it was being in the right place with the right people at the right time. Pre covid I work at MAC as a mua were I met a friend Bayla who was a model who always needed her makeup done so we collaborated on a lot of projects for photoshoots she would get booked for which exposed me to another realm of the industry and lots and lots of photographers and videographers who then were always looking for MUAs to work with on special projects. I’ve worked with countless photographers big names in the A like Jordan Viision, dr8nn, calvinmauricemedia, art by Seawards Dawson and big celebrity film maker Terrius Mykel who I form a good relationship with over the years really gave me a lot of opportunities to work him on some really big projects that kinda allowed me to go to that next level in the film/production industry which is how I landed work with tv personalities like boss tec and sapphire from Zeus network Joseline cabaret and even bigger artists like Key Lead MUA for stars like Glorilla and Sexxy Reds “what you know about me” music video and Glorilla and Latto’s “procedure” music video both directed by Benny boom! Which were such an amazing opportunity to be apart I still get chills when I see those videos and hear those songs like wow I was really apart of this! Those experiences allowed me to learn production
/set etiquette and how to work with big celebrities names. I love what I do and as an artist I constantly refine my skills and talents while helping aspiring artists get the ball rolling.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not! Still to this day I get so anxious when I’m working with clients and over analyzing everything and saying i should’ve use this product or i should’ve done this technique all because i want to be the best and people that book me deserve that and learning how to navigate to unhappy customers. Some clients will try you and I just have remind myself of how far I have come and I’m still growing this business of mine. Some struggles I face is probably comparison with the way social media is it’s so hard not to compare your work against the next makeup artist but I try to remind myself I do good work and people are still making appointments with me I’m still getting hired for projects etc and this is my own race
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in natural soft glams for all the girls! You still look like yourself i just enhance your features! What sets me apart is no 2 looks look the same i could do the same makeup and use the same products on 2 different people and they look completely different. That’s is because all my glams our customized and tailored to my clients needs. I have over 10k followers on TikTok where I show the girls how to do there makeup and I share my day to day life and tips and tricks when it comes to makeup and the latest and trendy products on the beauty market
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
You have to have systems and structures in place and policies so people can’t try you and you have to stand on business when it comes to your business you can’t let me people tell you what they are going to do or try to finesse you. They wouldn’t and couldn’t do it to the Chanel’s and the Gucci’s and LV’s so you won’t do it to me
