Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Burton.
Brandon, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve been taking pictures since I was a kid, I actually still have the camera my mom had that I would use. As far as my professional journey, that started around 2005 when I lived in Orlando. I would help a friend of mine on his shoots, and I was able to watch him edit & just learn some trick of the trade. Soon after, I got a camera and started experimenting. It became therapeutic in a way.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My biggest challenge, especially since I was never “formally” trained, has been imposter syndrome. As a creator, an artist, we tend to be our own worst critic. There have been times where people have praised my work, but I’ll look at that same piece and say I should have done this or that better. Or finding myself in an opportunity in which I didn’t feel I was worthy of, which caused anxiety, only to find out my client loved the work. So definitely that inner battle has been my biggest challenge.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
While I’m know for photography, I also shoot and edit videos, as well as currently in the process of opening a Afro-Caribbean holistic retreat called Sankofa Village which will be located in St. Croix, USVI. Some would say I’m a Jack of all trades. Some of the things I’m most proud of in my photography/video career, would include: receiving a metal and praises from President Obama for the work my team and I did on the D.o.D project that focused on mTBI. Also, being able to help people bring their creative views to life is always very rewarding.
What sets me apart from others? I don’t really like that question, I’m me! That’s what sets me apart. You’ll never get another me, but that’s the beauty of this whole thing. We all have something to offer, but this is the world through my lens.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
First and foremost, the most high, the ultimate creator. Outside of that, my mom has always been my biggest cheerleader, through all my ventures. I have to thank my bros for giving me that kick in the butt when I need it, and helping me see past my own bs at times. My family and friends who support, and all the dope creatives I’ve had the pleasure not only to work with, but also learn from.
