Life & Work with Jamila McQueen of Atlanta, GA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamila McQueen.

Hi Jamila, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey started with a deep love for fashion — and, admittedly, a bit of a bad shopping habit. I’ve always been drawn to clothing that tells a story and expresses individuality, but I found myself constantly searching for pieces that truly reflected who I am and coming up short. That’s when the idea sparked: instead of endlessly buying, why not create? I wanted to design something that felt authentic, something that carried my voice and vision. So I took the leap and began building my own clothing line, piece by piece, fueled by creativity, curiosity, and a desire to make something that was entirely mine.
Then COVID hit, and like so many others, my world came to a sudden halt. At first, it was daunting — everything shut down, plans were paused, and uncertainty was everywhere. But in that stillness, I found space to breathe and create. The time away from the usual rush gave me the chance to experiment, refine my designs, and truly define what my brand stood for. What started as a small, personal project evolved into something much greater — a reflection of resilience, reinvention, and the power of turning challenges into opportunities for growth and self-expression.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like any journey worth taking, mine has been filled with highs and lows that shaped who I am today. Along the way, I faced moments that tested my strength — from struggling with my mental health to coping with the loss of loved ones who meant the world to me. Those experiences left deep marks, but they also reminded me of the importance of slowing down, showing myself grace, and finding purpose in the pain. I also lost friends along the way, which was hard, but it taught me that not everyone is meant to continue the journey with you — and that’s okay. Every setback, every loss, and every lonely moment pushed me to grow, to create from a more honest place, and to find healing through my work.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I wear many hats in my career, and that’s exactly what I love about it. I not only produce but also own television shows — a role that allows me to bring creative visions to life from concept to screen. Beyond television, I’m the proud owner of Ciao Bella, my clothing brand that reflects my passion for style, confidence, and self-expression. I’ve become known for my professionalism, strong problem-solving skills, and, of course, always dressing to impress — whether I’m on set or in a business meeting.
What truly sets me apart is my ability to multitask and thrive across multiple projects at once — the ultimate jack of all trades. I take pride in balancing creativity with strategy, seamlessly shifting between fashion, production, and business management. But above all, I’m most proud of my education. Even as a business owner, earning two degrees, including a master’s, has been one of my greatest achievements. It’s given me a strong foundation and perspective that continues to set me apart in the industries I work within.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorite childhood memories will always be riding in my dad’s 350 ZX with my four brothers. Now, if you know anything about that car, you know it’s a two-seater — so you can only imagine the chaos and laughter that came with trying to fit all of us inside. My dad would roll the windows down, crank up the music, and drive as fast as he could down the open road. I can still remember the wind rushing through my hair, all of us laughing and yelling, “Go faster, Pops!” It was pure joy — no worries, no responsibilities, just the thrill of the moment and the feeling of being free. Those rides weren’t just about speed; they were about togetherness, love, and the kind of memories that stay with you forever.
