Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Ingram.
Hi Angela, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
For as long as I could remember, I had been climbing the corporate ladder. Each rung promised more security, a bigger paycheck, and the illusion of success. On the outside, everything seemed perfect. I had the job, the title, and the salary to match—but internally, I was slowly suffocating.
The daily grind of corporate America began to feel like a never-ending cycle of meetings, targets, and performance reviews. The work was uninspiring, and every day I felt further removed from my true passions. What once excited me now drained me. And the more I achieved, the more I realized that I wasn’t building a life I wanted to live—I was building a life I felt I should want.
The turning point came after not sleeping and eating for weeks because of anxiety from my corporate “dream job”. My husband saw the effects of me not sleeping and being stressed. He asked what I wanted to if money wasn’t an issue. I wanted a passion projects —things like creating something of my own, building a community, and making a tangible impact on the world around me. It hit me like a wave: I couldn’t keep living for someone else’s vision. I needed to follow my own.
I came from a close-knit family that had always dreamed of opening a business together, a place where we could create, share, and build something that represented our values. We wanted to offer more than just a product—we wanted to offer an experience, a space where people could gather, enjoy great food and drinks, and feel like they were part of something special.
After much discussion and planning, we decided on a vision: Cafe Bartique—a modern cafe that would blend great coffee, artisanal foods, and a sense of community, all within the charm of Historic Cascade Heights. The neighborhood was an unexpected but perfect choice. Cascade Heights was rich in history, diversity, and untapped potential. We saw a place where creativity could thrive, and we wanted Cafe Bartique to be at the heart of that revival.
Opening the cafe wasn’t easy. We spent months researching the best suppliers, crafting our menu, and designing every inch of the space. But it wasn’t just about the logistics—it was about creating something that felt authentic, something that could give back to the community and make people feel at home.
When we finally opened the doors, it felt like we were welcoming a new family into our lives. The first few months were a whirlwind—learning the ins and outs of running a business, adjusting to the demands of the cafe, and refining our offerings. But there is an undeniable joy in seeing people gather, relax, and enjoy the space we work so hard to create. The energy in Cascade Heights continues to shift, and Cafe Bartique is a symbol of that change.
We make sure that every cup of coffee we brew, every pastry we serve, and every event we host reflects our values. We believe in sustainability, supporting local artisans, and creating a space where people from all walks of life can feel connected.
And as the days passed, the nagging feeling of discontent I had carried for so long started to fade. Running Cafe Bartique isn’t just a job—it’s a life I have built with my family, and it is everything I had dreamed of. There is fulfillment in every aspect of it, from the laughter shared over a cup of coffee to the creativity that flows through the walls of the cafe.
Looking back, leaving corporate America was the best decision I ever made. It wasn’t easy, but it was necessary. And now, as I stand behind the counter of Cafe Bartique, watching our customers and our community grow, I know I’ve found my purpose. My family and I didn’t just build a business; we built a home, a place where dreams are realized, and where every sip and every smile reminds us that this was the journey we were meant to take.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not a smooth at all! New restaurants usually take at least 1 year to make a profit and some of the struggles include:
Building Brand Recognition in a New Area, Inventory Issues, Staffing Challenges, Unexpected Operating Costs, & Managing Work-Life Balance as a Family are just a few. We have family meetings often and regularly check in to manage these struggles.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
