Meet Stevie Carter of Morningside, Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stevie Carter.

Hi Stevie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always wanted to do hair but it took me awhile to get here! I worked in EMS for 10 years then got my MBA and moved to the corporate world for a couple of years. During that time I never stopped wanting to do hair, so in 2018 I threw caution to the wind and started cosmetology school at the Aveda Institute Atlanta. I’m currently working as a Master Cosmetologist and Education Director at Keenan Salon in Atlanta and I’ve genuinely never been happier.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has absolutely not been a smooth road but it’s been an interesting journey for sure. I opened my own business in 2022 and worked for myself for three years before admitting to myself that I don’t enjoy working alone. I much prefer being part of an amazing team and working towards goals together than trying to create the magic on my own. So yeah, I’ve had a lot of self-discovery along the way and now know that I definitely get in my own way if I’m not careful,

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an educator and stylist at heart. As the Education Director at Keenan Salon, I specialize in developing new talent through our Bloom Team program while continuing to work behind the chair as an artist. My focus is on creating hair that feels lived-in, intentional, and true to the person wearing it.

I’m probably most known as a colorist and curl/coil specialist, and for being able to connect with and understand my client’s vision. The ability to listen, interpret, and translate someone’s personality into their look is my superpower. My work celebrates individuality and authenticity, especially within queer and diverse communities who haven’t always felt seen in traditional salon spaces. What sets me apart is my belief that doing hair is both an art form and a form of care. I approach every guest and every class with the same intention: to make people feel confident, understood, and inspired.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
