Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Ab-One.
Hi Jay, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been drawn to art, the kind that tells a story and leaves something behind. My journey into tattooing started with that simple passion and a curiosity to see how far I could take it. In the early days, it was just me, a sketchbook, and a drive to create. I spent countless hours learning, experimenting, and earning my place in the tattoo world one piece at a time.
What began as a personal pursuit eventually became Lambert & Gunn Tattoo in Whittier, California, a space built on craftsmanship, creativity, and respect for the art form. Every tattoo that comes out of our shop represents years of growth, dedication, and the belief that good work speaks for itself.
Today, I’m still pushing forward as an artist, a business owner, and someone who’s passionate about inspiring others to chase what they love, no matter how far off it seems.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Every step came with its own challenges. In the beginning, it was tough just getting my foot in the door, learning the business side of tattooing, and proving myself in an industry that demands respect and consistency. There were times when money was tight, when I questioned if I was doing the right thing, and when balancing work, life, and creativity felt impossible.
Owning a shop brought a whole new set of struggles from managing artists and clients to keeping the doors open through tough seasons. But those moments built me. They taught me patience, discipline, and how to keep moving no matter what. Every struggle shaped the artist and the person I am today.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Tattooing, for me, is more than just putting ink on skin, it’s storytelling. I specialize in black and gray and color realism, detailed custom pieces, and designs that carry real meaning for the person wearing them. Every tattoo I create starts with a conversation, understanding someone’s story and translating that into art that’ll live with them forever.
At Lambert & Gunn Tattoo, we focus on quality, craftsmanship, and creating an atmosphere where both artists and clients feel respected. I’m most proud of the reputation we’ve built, not just for clean work, but for the energy and professionalism that comes with it.
What sets me apart is the connection I build with people. I care about the details, the shading, the balance, the emotion behind it all. I want every piece to reflect not just my style, but the person’s story. At the end of the day, it’s about authenticity, creating something that stands the test of time, both on the skin and in memory.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
One of my favorite childhood memories is spending hours drawing, sometimes on paper, sometimes on anything I could find. I remember getting lost in it, blocking out the world and just creating. It was my escape, my way of expressing things I didn’t have the words for yet. Those early moments taught me how powerful art could be, how it could calm you, challenge you, and connect you to something bigger. Looking back, I think that’s where everything started. That feeling never really left.
