Check Out Tanya Roberts’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanya Roberts.

Hi Tanya, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
It was during my second layoff in 2023 I was working as a substitute Teacher and doing some part HR work and the holidays was approaching. To make some extra money for Christmas I started selling my desserts, I had 20 orders at Thanksgiving and 27 orders at Christmas. Once the New Year came one of my sisters Erica Miller told me I should get my business license and become an LLC, while my other sister Keisha Dean-Merriweather told me about protected myself by getting Liability insurance. From there I started participating in festivals around Gwinnett county and fulfilling private orders for Baby Showers, Rehearsal Dinners, Birthday parties, etc.
where I am today, well I am coming up on my second year of having my business and it is growing slow but steady I have plans to remodel my kitchen early 2026 to create a more industrial kitchen and improve on the space I have. Then who knows where 2026 might take me and my business but I am open to all possibilities on what the future may hold.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, and the business can be sporadic so I still work a full time job which I found in April 2024. Also early on festivals are hard to gauge so sometimes I would have a lot of desserts left that I would have to try and sell so I wouldn’t lose out on money. I can remember an event I had and it was slated to have 300 people, but it was more like 100 and I had over 150 dessert left over that needed to be sold. I reached out to everyone I knew and got a lot of them sold but I still had about 50 left so that lost made me more cautious about the festivals I did moving forward.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am currently an HR Director, I have been in the HR profession since 2003. I am a helper by nature and love working as an HR professional. Over the years I have always made sure to help employees and I can, always being a Bridge between Management and Employees and making sure everyone feels treated fairly and they trust HR.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
To always be transparent with people and don’t overpromise.
