Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Reverend Hylton of Matrietta

We recently had the chance to connect with Reverend Hylton and have shared our conversation below.

Good morning Reverend, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Well, as I answer these questions I have a 3 week old baby boy. I would say that he is bringing me so much joy.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am Reverend Hylton. A singer/Songwriter out of Atlanta. For the last decade I have been writing, recording, performing, and touring. Prior to pandemic I was doing about 200 shows a year nationwide. The last few years the touring and shows have slowed down a bit but this year I released a new album called “Night Under the Stars” that I am super proud of. The album is a collection of songs blending Americana, folk, and acoustic roots, reflecting on growth, healing, and the quiet power of transformation but still touches on the battles that continue to be a part of my life.

All that being said, when pandemic hit I pivoted and got my real estate license and have been selling homes in the Atlanta area since 2022. It’s been a fun way to network and help folks find their dream homes. But music and especially performing are what I love the most!

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
Probably the relationship I had with my dad. We lost him suddenly last year but I definitely would not be person I am today if it wasn’t for him. I saw in him the person that I want to be. His kindness, patience, and compassion for all people.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There have been plenty of times where I almost gave up but there is one time in particular that I can remember clearly. I was driving east through New Mexico with the set setting behind me. I had just had a string of shows that just weren’t good. Not good turnouts and I was feeling really defeated. I remember thinking to myself, “what’s the point of all this? I should just head back south.” As I was thinking that and that very moment, I received an email. The email was from someone who had seen me perform a year prior and just wanted to say that one of my songs had stuck with him and that he was celebrating 1 year sober and that song had helped him on many nights. At that moment it all made sense. I was doing exactly what I was supposed to be doing.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
Stream and views are measurements of success.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you laid down your name, role, and possessions—what would remain?
The songs. They are recorded and out there to be heard and interpreted. When I am gone the songs still remain.
