Today we’d like to introduce you to Perry Brubaker.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I began my career as a physical therapist then went on to become a prevention & health promotion specialist, focusing on midlife women’s health and the hormonal transition. I was 37 years old and an avid runner when my husband very lovingly told me I was “the sickest, healthiest person” he knew, and begged me to find someone who could help me stop getting sick, sleep better, and have more energy.
I found no one could explain what was going on but all had a toolbox full of medical treatments and supplements for me to try. Leaning on my training in research, physiology, and health promotion I developed solutions to help me manage what I discovered were perimenopause symptoms. I then committed to sharing what I had learned through my own experience with any woman who felt lost and needed help.
I’m now 50, an avid and blissful walker, and sometimes mildly disgruntled jogger. I feel empowered to make health decisions that fit my physiology and no longer feel vulnerable to “what is going on?!” I use my knowledge and expertise as a woman, wife, mother, and health and wellbeing professional to guide women toward their best health.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not, I was dismissed by medical providers and it frustrated me because I myself was a provider. I felt they were not being collaborative to help me in figuring out what was going on. So I just figured it out myself which took a lot of trial and error.
As you know, we’re big fans of Brubaker Prevention & Health Promotion. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I have a program called PerryMenopause. It consists of delivering individualized midlife women’s health services that combine traditional lifestyle and health coaching with remote physiological monitoring by way of wearable technology (Garmin device) if needed. The program supports women navigating perimenopause and early postmenopause by integrating biometric data into coaching consultations, enabling tailored guidance and navigation and support should they need to seek a medical provider.
I also have created a modular women’s health promotion series focused on the hormonal and health and wellbeing shifts of midlife. The program guides women in “re-dosing” their health habits-nutrition, sleep, activity, and stress management-supporting the ability to thrive during the perimenopausal and postmenopausal years. It is designed for both virtual and in-person delivery, and the series can be customized for communities, employers, or organizations.
I believe bad actors monetize on the vulnerability that women feel when they are going through midlife and their hormonal transitions. These bad actors may also offer unnecessary out of pocket wellness or lifestyle interventions that are costly with a promise the woman will feel better. I certainly fell victim to this when I was trying to figure out what was going on with me. I offer a reasonable fee and my goal is for the woman to be informed so that she doesn’t need me in perpetuity. I also offer local free sessions at my public library to help scale access to the information that women may need. If I must charge for a community session, I set the fee very reasonable so that there is little financial barrier.
Health and wellbeing are not hard to understand; it’s been made confusing by our healthcare system and wellness industry. I strive to help women understand how health and wellbeing works, how to choose what to focus on in their health and wellbeing on depending on their life season, and how to advocate for themselves should they need to seek care.
How do you think about happiness?
The smallest of things bring me joy. I’ve had enough life experiences to have gratitude and find joy in the simplest of things.
