Community Highlights: Meet Dr. Kre Johnson of Brownstone Healthcare & Aesthetics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Kre Johnson.

Hi Dr. Kre, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a country girl at heart! The daughter of 2 educators, Spelman- grown, who dared to dream big! I always wanted to be a doctor. So, despite it taking me on a journey to get there, it’s just what I did. I set my mind to the goal and exceeded my expectations. I am now the solo owner of a family medicine private practice office in Birmingham, AL, where I oversee 3 different locations.

I am here today because I dared to dream BIG!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No the road has not been smooth. Being an African American woman physician means I make up a small percentage of the population— 2%. The path was not made with me in mind. After Spelman, I completed a post-baccalaureate program that increased my chances of getting into medical school and succeeding there. So it took me a little longer to complete the process, but I did!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I am a family medicine physician, and we care for those who are insured, underinsured, or uninsured. This is a subscription-based type model where you pay a monthly fee to be able to text the doctor directly, and we offer discounted labs and ancillary testing prices.
Since we do not know where healthcare is going in the future, it is good to know that there is an option if your insurance becomes too expensive or nonexistent, even.

I am most proud that the brand was built from the ground up, and now we partner with the City of Birmingham and run their employee health clinic.

How do you think about happiness?
Reading urban fiction, traveling, (my) girlfriends, and sweet tea all make me happy. Because they each represent peace!
