Daily Inspiration: Meet Jessica Chaos

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Chaos.

Hi Jessica, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started with getting my fashion design degree. After college I found a job as a seamstress within the tradeshow industry. Over the years I have put my sewing skills to use in many industries from fashion and alterations, to interiors and upholstery and back to tradeshow display fabric production and always excelled. I changed my last name to Chaos when I got divorced, because my personal mantra is that life is chaos and we can’t control what happens, only our responses to what happens; also I always wanted to own my own company called Chaos Unlimited, Chaos Works, Chaos Unbound or all of the above. In 2022 I finally decided to start my own business, after getting burnt out in the company I had worked for, and founded Chaos Works. It is an all encompassing sewing service company providing direct to customer services as well as b2b services. Chaos Works has steadily built a reputation for some of the highest quality sewing services available in the area and my clients are frequent repeaters. I love taking on challenging projects that others would turn away. I thrive on the bragging rights 😉 My favorite projects are the ones that keep me on my toes.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I think every business owner learns sooner or later that there is no such thing as a truly straight path to success. We all have to learn along the way and pivot or perish. I have learned to roll with the challenges, but my sister is a huge help in keeping me sane and grounded when things get rough. The biggest challenge is always cash flow. I often say that running a business is exactly like managing your personal finances, just with more zeros and the fact is a short pay check, a sick day or car troubles can affect your business in the same ways they affect your life, so as a business owner I am constantly trying to build a buffer fund that keeps me going in the dips. The incredible part has been the community support and client confidence that I have experienced. I truly could not be where I am today without my amazing clients and community!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a seamstress at my core. I can design and help my clients create, but I am best at bringing other peoples visions to life. What sets me and Chaos Works apart from other sewing production services is my obsession with quality. I never settle for good enough and I am not afraid to tackle complex projects. I have successfully completed many projects that other companies have turned away as not possible. I am most proud of the fact that I took the dive to start my own business. It is scary leaving a secure job (even if it makes you miserable) to try something not guaranteed and uncharted, but I believed in myself and my close community believed in me to.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I believe risk taking is necessary to growth. If something makes us nervous it is our body telling us we are about to do something exciting and important. We all take risks everyday, I don’t think its avoidable, but I think if you can accept that risk comes in levels and that most risks aren’t life threatening then you can challenge yourself to achieve incredible things that other people just never try. My whole brand as a person is that life is gonna be chaotic, so lean in and have fun and do not regret the things you reach for. I only regret the opportunities I let slip by. I started my business knowing I could fail, but knowing I would rather try and fail than never try. Every day I work hard to keep my business going and every day I could fail, but I do my best and am proud of what I have achieved. I am so much happier scared to fail everyday than if I had stayed in a secure job that I was bored and miserable with.
