Community Highlights: Meet Meaghan Thomson of Peachtree Curling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meaghan Thomson.

Hi Meaghan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Peachtree Curling is thrilled to celebrate our 10th anniversary as a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to growing the sport of curling right here in Georgia!

Our story began in 2015, when a few determined pioneers saw an opportunity to bring curling to the South in a big way. When a local rink owner decided to close one of his hockey sheets, a group of just 15 passionate volunteers stepped up to transform it into Georgia’s first dedicated curling facility. Through grassroots fundraising and the hard work of nearly 50 volunteers, our dream became reality and by November 2015, the Peachtree Curling facility was born.

Today, we’re proud to be home to over 150 curlers from across the Atlanta metro area and beyond, from Peachtree City to Gainesville and LaGrange. Our ice is buzzing every night of the week with league play, friendly matches, and laughter. Whether you’re a seasoned curler or brand-new to the sport, there’s always a game waiting for you.

We love introducing new players to curling through our Learn to Curl classes on Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons, and hosting memorable group events, from team-building corporate outings to birthday celebrations and friends’ nights out.

Each year, we welcome curlers from across the U.S. and Canada for our two annual bonspiels (regional tournaments), held in early fall and spring, a true highlight of the season where competition meets camaraderie.

We’re also incredibly proud of our Juniors Curling program (Saturday mornings at 9 a.m.) and our Wheelchair Curling program, both of which continue to grow each season. In just a few short years, Peachtree Curling has become a training home for members of Team USA’s Paralympic development program, a testament to the heart and dedication of our entire community.

From humble beginnings to a thriving curling hub, Peachtree Curling’s story is one of passion, teamwork, and Southern hospitality on ice.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Anyone who’s ever run a nonprofit knows it’s not always smooth sailing. We’re a mix of people from all walks of life, different backgrounds, beliefs, and perspectives, yet somehow, we all find common ground on the ice. That’s the magic of curling.

It’s honestly beautiful to see people of all races, genders, ethnicities, and political views come together for the love of this game. Curling has a way of melting away differences and creating real community. One of my favorite traditions is “broomstacking,” where the winners buy the first round for the losers after a match. There’s just something special about that moment everyone gathered around a table, laughing, sharing stories, and raising a glass together.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Peachtree Curling proudly stands as Georgia’s one and only dedicated curling club, where the ice is reserved exclusively for curling rocks and curlers (no skates allowed!). We love introducing this awesome, one-of-a-kind sport to metro ATL-iens through our popular Learn to Curl classes and private Group Events. It’s the perfect way to slide into something new, meet great people, and have a ton of fun. And fair warning, once you’re hooked like we are, you’ll be joining our weekly recreational leagues before you know it! We also welcome the next generation and adaptive athletes through our Juniors and Wheelchair Curling programs, proving that curling truly is a sport for everyone.

What matters most to you? Why?
Over the past 10 years, we’ve proudly maintained glowing 4.9 and 5-star ratings across Google, Facebook, Yelp, and more, a true testament to the incredible experiences our guests have on the ice. Our secret? A simple formula: happy curlers make a happy club. Whether it’s a first-time “Learn to Curl” participant or a group event trying something new, we make sure everyone not only throws their first stone successfully but, more importantly, has a blast doing it. None of this would be possible without our amazing volunteer instructors, whose enthusiasm and passion for curling shine through every single class. Their energy is contagious, and it’s what keeps people coming back for more!
