Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Chanin.
Hi Michael, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in Macon and, from a young age, I was taught the importance of putting in the work. My grandparents owned a clothing store on Cherry St. in Macon called Stephen’s and seeing the hard work they put into that store everyday had a great impression on me. They were up early to open the shop, worked late to close it down, and put a lot of attention into the smallest details to ensure their customers were receiving the best service.
What I learned from my grandparents at Stephen’s, I brought to my company, Cherry Street Energy. We are the best at what we do because our team works hard, right down to the smallest details, to bring best-in-class energy technology to our customers’ facilities.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In building a 100-year company, it’s only natural that you’re going to hit some bumps in the road. One challenge we face today is market education. The organizations we look to serve are not even aware they have options for their energy. Cherry Street benefits from a 10-year-old law in Georgia that allows for the third-party sale of electricity, but many in the marketplace in our state are unaware this law exists.
These organizations are feeling the pressure of rising energy rates, and that pressure will continue to build as more businesses and data centers come to our state. Our team spends a lot of time informing prospective customers about our model, and how that model can help them meet their energy needs with reliable, affordable electricity.
We’ve been impressed with Cherry Street Energy, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Cherry Street Energy is a power company. We build industry-leading solar power systems at our customers’ facilities, reliably producing energy that is consumed at the point of use. We own, operate, and maintain over 150 solar power systems across the Southeast, supporting businesses like Delta Air Lines and Porsche Cars North America, manufacturers like Beauflor and Grenzebach, schools like Woodward Academy and Atlanta International School, and local governments like the City of Atlanta and Fulton County.
These customers span the spectrum of operations and services, but they all are seeking solutions for the same things: operational certainty, budget predictability, and affordable energy. Because Cherry Street provides the capital required for the installation of these systems and then builds them, our customers gain all three at once. They pay us for the energy, like they do with their power company
