Today we’d like to introduce you to Will Preston.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Music has always been deeply rooted in me. I didn’t have a master plan or a roadmap. I just followed what felt natural, and one song led to another. Eventually those songs became my debut project, which traveled farther than I ever imagined. It opened doors I didn’t know existed and connected me with people all over the world.
My journey has been independent from day one. I learned how to produce a project, build a brand, negotiate, market, and stay consistent even when the road was slow. Independence forces you to grow. You learn everything. You own everything. And you appreciate every win.
Today, I’m in a new creative chapter. My music is more intentional and rooted in experience. I’m also building a lifestyle brand, My Best Interest Apparel, which represents the mindset that has kept me moving forward. Every choice I’ve made in my career has been tied to one question: is this in my best interest.
Where I am today is the result of believing in my vision, even before anyone else did.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has not always been smooth, but it has been purposeful and rewarding. The biggest challenges have usually shown up in the quiet moments, the moments where you have to decide if you believe in yourself enough to keep going. As an independent artist, you wear every hat many times. There are phases when you are the creative team, the marketing department, the funding source, and the quality control. That can be overwhelming.
There were times when I questioned if the sacrifices were worth it. Times when release dates shifted, budgets ran tight, or support systems changed. I’ve had songs that I believed in get overlooked, and I’ve had moments where momentum felt slow. But those challenges taught me patience and resilience. They forced me to sharpen my instincts and trust my vision.
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that progress does not always look like movement. Sometimes the growth is internal. Sometimes the win is deciding not to quit.
Every struggle shaped the artist and entrepreneur I am today. And I wouldn’t trade the road for a smoother one, because the grind gave me the grit. But I’ll admit that no obstacle has been enough to ultimately sidetrack my passion and drive.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a recording artist, songwriter, and creative entrepreneur. At my core, I specialize in storytelling through music. I write about the parts of love and life that people often feel but don’t always say. My songs lean into emotion. Sometimes it’s romantic, sometimes reflective, sometimes vulnerable, but it is always honest. I am known for soulful R&B and pop that feels cinematic and personal at the same time.
What sets me apart is intention. I don’t create music to chase trends or algorithms. I create from a place of truth. If I don’t feel it, I won’t release it. I believe that when music is rooted in authenticity, it finds the people it was meant for.
I am proud of the fact that I have built my career independently by passion, consistency, and connection. My music has reached listeners in multiple countries, charted overseas, and opened doors without compromising who I am.
Another part of my work is storytelling through my lifestyle brand, My Best Interest Apparel. It represents the personal philosophy that has carried me through my career. The brand celebrates self belief and making choices that serve your highest good. Music and fashion are both ways of expressing identity, and I enjoy building those worlds side by side.
My goal has always been to create work that moves people. If someone listens to a song and hears their story in it, that is the greatest reward.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I am a firm believer that what you feed your mind shows up in your work. I read a lot, and I enjoy listening to podcasts that challenge how I think.
Malcolm Gladwell has been a consistent influence. His books have shaped how I understand instinct, creativity, and human behavior. Blink in particular reminded me to trust my intuition and not overthink the creative process. Sometimes the first thought is the truest one.
Right now I’m reading Made to Stick by brothers Chip and Dan Heath. The concept is simple but powerful. Ideas stick when they are clear, unexpected, easy to visualize, credible, emotional, and told through story. As a songwriter and creative entrepreneur, that aligns perfectly with how I work. My goal is always to create something people can feel, remember, and connect to.
I also enjoy a variety of podcasts. Anything that helps me grow, stretch my imagination, or sharpen my instincts becomes part of my creative fuel.
