Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Anderson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m Mike Anderson, a writer, director, and lifelong journal junkie who’s been scribbling down the chaos of everyday life since 1991. I’ve got shelves of notebooks to prove it. Those pages turned into my creative lab—where I learned how people talk, how they hurt, how they’re hilarious without trying—and now they fuel everything I make on the page, on set, and in the studio.
I write stories for the kids (and adults) who never really fit the mold. I’m the author of Bucky Wall: Weirdo Hero, illustrated by R. Land, and the upcoming Three Apple Jack & the Tall Southern Gent. My work leans into misfits, big feelings, and the beautiful mess of growing up. If you’ve ever felt like the odd one out, you’re basically my target audience.
I also come from the film and media side—I direct and develop projects that borrow from that same emotional toolkit: humor, vulnerability, and a little bit of “what the hell did I just watch?” energy. I’ve made many music videos; ridden with Ludacris; grilled with Big Boi. I’ve spent years surrounded by young artists and weirdos-in-training, which keeps me honest and keeps me experimenting.
Lately, I’ve crashed into the podcast world too. I’m producing and editing the podcasts Alive Again and The Kylie Love Show for iHeart Media, which lets me play with real voices and real stories in real time. It’s a different format, same mission: make people feel seen and a little less alone.
At the end of the day, everything I do—books, film, podcasts, decades of journaling—is about this: turning all the strange, painful, funny stuff of being human into stories that say, “You’re not broken. You’re just alive.”
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This – whatever “this” is. Life, I suppose – has been brutally challenging and wonderfully difficult. Perfect in all of the imperfections. I’m at the phase of life, the downslope, you might say. Where I have the advantage of seeing that the struggles – the lack of money, the insecurity; heartbreak and pain, have been and will continue to be evolutionary in understanding the greater meaning of why I am here – and my connection to everything and everyone. Just a tiny piece of everything.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m not chasing perfection or brand polish. I’m chasing truth, connection, and that feeling of, “Oh, thank God, it’s not just me.” Whether it’s a kid in a book, an artist in a music video, or a guest on a podcast, my goal is the same: make them look and feel like themselves—and give whoever’s watching or listening permission to do the same.
How do you think about happiness?
what makes me most happy is helping people feel love.
