Today we’d like to introduce you to Mahogany McGill.
Hi Mahogany, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I grew up around sewing machines—literally. My grandmother and uncle were both seamstresses, so creativity was kind of the family language. I begged my grandma to teach me how to sew when I was eight, made my first pillowcase, and I’ve been hooked ever since. I was always that kid who was doing something creative—poetry, drawing, whatever—so sewing just became another way for me to express myself.
When the pandemic hit, I read a quote about how the Harlem Renaissance bloomed right after the 1918 pandemic, and something in me clicked. I decided to really take sewing seriously and dive into design. That choice eventually led me to the illustrious Clark Atlanta University, where I sharpened my skills and fell deeper in love with tailoring and craftsmanship.
Now I’m here—still creating, still learning, and still chasing the art that eight-year-old me fell in love with.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not. I’ve dealt with a lot of imposter syndrome and struggled with my confidence along the way. As a designer, that’s honestly been my biggest obstacle—fighting those little moments where I question myself or my talent. But I truly believe God gave me this gift for a reason, to create and to reflect the beauty He put on this earth. So it’s something I push through daily.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a sustainable designer and tailor, and my work sits at the intersection of craftsmanship and conscious fashion. Lately, I’ve been focusing heavily on tailoring, but one of my biggest passions will always be recycling and transforming old clothes into fresh, stylish, one-of-one pieces. I love taking something that’s been forgotten and giving it a completely new life.
I’m most proud of the fact that my work has purpose. I truly believe fashion should be cyclical—not something that harms the planet. Through both my tailoring and my designs, I encourage people to hold onto their clothes longer, invest in pieces that last, and choose options that are better for the environment. What sets me apart is that I’m not just creating clothes; I’m creating sustainability, creativity, and individuality all at once.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is my relationship with God. Without God, I am nothing. In every season—whether I’m struggling or succeeding—He’s been the one constant guiding me, grounding me, and showing me the way. My faith is what keeps me centered, keeps me humble, and keeps me moving forward with purpose.
