Life & Work with Jea NICHOLSON of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jea NICHOLSON.

Hi Jea, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I look back to where it all started. I think about my church home back in Chicago. As a little girl I got started in this business through theater ministry there. My pastor’s daughter was a playwright and every year like clockwork she handed me a script and said she wanted me in every single play. There was no questions asked I just said yes lol. I enjoyed hearing crowd interaction and watching the audience faces and light up as they gave us standing ovations for every single performance we did. That definitely gives me a natural high. I thoroughly enjoyed being on stage and in front of the camera today. I soon realized that I love the art. Shouts out to outreach Church of God in Christ in little old Harvey Illinois. I’m grateful for someone seeing something in me that I didn’t see in myself in that moment.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I can honestly say that no journey is ever all the way smooth for anyone. There are always going to be obstacles, doubt, naysayers and life happening, coming you on a daily basis but when you have a passion for what you do and it’s in your DNA no matter what happens you’re always going to gravitate to what you were called to do. There have been some self-doubt feeling like because you get so many no’s in this industry you start to wonder if this is even the path that you’re supposed to be on and you deal with the issues of people that you thought were going to support you they don’t support you and that can be really heartbreaking but I have learned to develop some really tough skin and I have put my faith in my trust in GOD’S hands and just letting the almighty lead and direct my path. I feel like anything worth having is worth working hard for and if you don’t want it bad enough you won’t put in the effort to make sure that you get it. We are definitely guaranteed some hell and some turmoil on this Earth but you can’t have a testimony without a test and you can’t help the next person if you never experienced or gone through anything.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I Jea (Jay) Nicholson am an actress, writer, director, licensed barber stylist and makeup artist. I am best known for my craft in makeup, special effects makeup and acting. I have to say I don’t specialize in just one thing I am what they call a renaissance woman lol because I wear many hats whether it’s in front of the camera or behind the camera I enjoy every bit of it. I’m mostly proud of how far I’ve come just in life. I had given up on this for some time and to get back in it after having been gone for almost a decade and coming back in as if I never left and still having the skills and the gift to create not just on paper but on actual human beings it’s amazing. I stand out because I never allow anyone to put me in a box. Whenever I want to do I do it and a lot of people can’t say that. You can’t break down barriers in a comfort zone.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love that Atlanta is a huge melting pot of all sorts of people. No matter where you go there’s always a way to connect with one another. The southern hospitality has been great since I’ve been here. I’ve met a lot of incredible people. There’s so much to do here and I plan on doing as much of it as possible lol. I do not like This disrespectful traffic lol and I really don’t like the Jurassic size bugs. I’m a city / suburban girl and country life is completely different from City Life. I’m glad to be here though gives me an opportunity to see how strong I really am.
