Today we’d like to introduce you to Abigail Ellison.
Hi Abigail, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I always aspired to be an artist since I was a kid and wasn’t sure which medium I wanted to get into. I spent years playing around with all types of artistic trades like crafts and drawings and painting. I had many people tell me they saw me as a tattoo artist and I finally made the decision to work towards that goal. I got an apprenticeship with Steven hullandar at paragon tattoos as he was close friends with my cousin. The apprenticeship was hard work but after a year and a half I made it through and became a tattoo artist. I’m very happy with my career and I finally found my medium
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all. It was some hard work. I was struggling to find part time work during my apprenticeship while the work force was really slim. I only made it when I got offered to be a piercer at the shop. But being an apprentice alone is a lot. You take care of all the cleaning, scheduling, setting up and breaking down all the artists stations and still keeping up with my homework given by my mentor. It was incredibly stressful and exhausting but it taught me how to handle stressful situations with clients and big events we would have at the shop. Also taught me a lot of problem solving
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a tattoo artist. Right now I specialize in American Traditional but looking into learning about other art styles. I started a cartoon sleeve with one of my clients and it’s been a wonderful journey as I do love drawing and tattooing cartoon characters from my youth.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
I grew up on a farm so I would say Waking up and spending my day in the pasture with the cows and our pet donkey. Playing in the creek and not coming home til my mom rang the dinner bell. We had a four wheeler too so all of us siblings took turns running through the pasture on it
