Daily Inspiration: Meet Larick Cricket Mathews

Today we’d like to introduce you to Larick Cricket Mathews.

Hi Larick Cricket, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Larick “Director Cricket” Mathews Biography

Larick Mathews, known in the industry as Director Cricket, began his creative ascent in Detroit, Michigan. What started as a passion for music production quickly placed him alongside legends Eminem, Royce da 5’9”, and J Dilla introducing him to the discipline, grit, and creativity of professional artistry.

Chasing bigger opportunities, he moved to Atlanta with dreams of growing as a music producer. But the Atlanta scene of that era wasn’t the open-door Mecca it is today. Instead of forcing a lane that didn’t feel aligned, he pivoted leaning fully into his second love: screenwriting and directing. Cricket devoured books, scripts, and film theory until the craft became second nature.

He polished his eye behind the camera directing music videos, and over the years built a résumé working with some of the biggest names in hip-hop. But even that success couldn’t contain his storytelling ambition. Cricket wanted worlds, arcs, characters emotion. So he shifted into filmmaking.

Today, Larick “Director Cricket” Mathews has grown into a multi-hyphenate filmmaker with a rapidly expanding catalog across major platforms. His recent body of work includes:
• Writer/Director – False Advertisement
• Writer/Director – Bloodbathh
• Director – Stoners
• Writer of Blue Devils (now streaming on all major platforms)
• Writer/Director – Brooklin, currently in post-production and releasing at the top of the year

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My journey wasn’t smooth. I didn’t walk into this industry with funding, connections, or a roadmap. I came with passion, hunger, and a mind wide open to learn everything the hard way. Every step I took came from grinding, studying, failing, adjusting, and pushing forward when most people would’ve folded.

I had to teach myself the game how to write, how to direct, how to build a world from a blank page and bring it to life. I learned what I needed not just to survive, but to grow and keep elevating in the industry I love: making movies.

And that’s the thing I genuinely love every part of it. The writing. The directing. The casting. The choices. The sound design. The edit. The late nights staring at timelines. The magic that happens when all the pieces finally click.

Man… I love it all.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a writer, a director, and a super-creative at heart. I live for the spark thinking of something wild, real, emotional, or unexpected… writing it down… and then bringing it to life in a way the world can feel.

Everything I create is rooted in reality, but filtered through my vision the world I build inside the world we all live in. I shift narratives, reshape perspectives, and tell the story the way it needs to be told… even if that means bending the rules or flipping the frame.

That’s the gift. That’s the passion. That’s the part that keeps me obsessed with this craft.

Any big plans?
My overall mission is bigger than films, credits, or accolades. I want to position myself in a way where my impact reaches people who carry the same hunger, drive, and vision I had when I started with nothing but passion. Everything I’ve learned along the way every skill, every mistake, every breakthrough I want to pour that into others so they can rise, create, and spark their own ripple effect.

Because storytelling isn’t just entertainment… it’s programming. Visuals shape how we think, how we feel, how we move, and what we believe is possible. For generations, the world has been programmed in ways that limit us, box us in, or define us through someone else’s lens.

My purpose is to shift that.
To reprogram.
To offer a better way.
To give the next generation an alternate ending one they can actually be proud of.

If I can inspire creators to tell stories that elevate us, challenge us, and remind us of our power… then my work is doing exactly what it was meant to do.
