Today we’d like to introduce you to Julio Ceballos.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
The first time I showed any interest in art was around 3 years of age. My mom still has that first drawing I did of the view from our kitchen window apartment in Bogota, Colombia where I was born. I don’t think there’s ever been any doubt in me or my family about what I wanted to do with my life. I was lucky to have such supportive parents. We moved to the U.S when I was around 9 and we have been in Atlanta ever since. I studied fine art at Georgia State University where I found even more support among my peers and teachers who have helped me get as far as I’ve gotten in my career.
Please tell us about your art.
It’s been an exploration of a lot of things. I primarily focus on paintings with the occasional deviation to installation art and sculpture. It is difficult to briefly describe my work because it varies so much in medium and concept. I don’t have a defined style or brand to anchor my creative process. Rather, my practice is guided by whatever has my attention at the time. Be it something new I’ve learned about or read or simply just a new medium or process I’ve discovered.
Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
It’s a daunting challenge for sure. Best advice I can offer is to stay engaged with the community. Building relationships has been key to gaining traction for me. Not just networking to get jobs but also building a support network. We didn’t sign up for an easy road but having friends with you in the struggle can make all the difference. That and a disciplined schedule to make sure you are creating and learning in between day jobs. It’s all about organization. Atlanta is a growing city and has plenty of financial art opportunities. It’s just a matter of finding them and being ready when they appear.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Easiest way to see my work is by wondering around downtown. There are a handful of public artworks I’ve completed in the past few years through the Cultural Affairs Office of Atlanta. I also show my work pretty regularly with Kibbee Gallery. I currently have two paintings hanging there for their latest show opening this weekend (June 23). I also have work at Kai Lin Gallery’s annual juried show. And if you know your way around the A you might find my mural off Metropolitan Parkway 😉 Ultimately, the best way to support my work is by sharing it. Come see it in person!
