Today we’d like to introduce you to ThatBoyJMike.
Hi ThatBoyJMike, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m originally from North Carolina and I carved my lane in music long before anyone knew my name. The journey really took flight two years ago, back in my hometown, when I crossed paths with Kidd Kidd at a studio I had begun recording my mixtape. What started as a chance meeting turned into a brotherhood. He showed me what it meant to move like a professional—how to prep, how to think bigger, and how to navigate this industry with intention instead of impulse. I went through a lot of setbacks and met a few roadblocks along this journey, but I always knew I would be who I am today.
In order to increase my opportunities, I decided to relocate to Atlanta. Since touching down, I’ve been able to build a team that consists of people who understand me a person, my music, and my vision. Everyone in my circle right now match my energy—talented, hungry, and locked in. I also have my manager, CJ Hornes from E’Lign Entertainment to help me bring my vision to life and to provide me with the right representation.
When it comes to my music at the heart of my sound is originality. I think the way my music hits you sonically it’s a vibe you can feel before you even catch the words themselves. I’ve always respected the art and the impact music has on the world, and I approach every track with that in mind.
I’ve endured real struggles chasing this dream, moments that would have broken a lot of people. But through it all, my faith in God I stayed steady. That’s the anchor behind every record I create and every move that I make.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road hasn’t been smooth—far from it. One of the toughest lessons has been figuring out who’s real in this game and who’s just playing a role. There are a lot of people in it just using and scamming artist chasing a quick dollar, with no real love for the artist or the culture.
Another challenge has been pushing past the slow acceptance that comes with bringing something new and original to the table. New sound, new branding—everybody doesn’t embrace it right away. But that’s the cost of standing out instead of blending in. If you look up the history on any of the greats in this game, they all where original and carved their own lane in this game. This is what creates longevity and a steady bag in this business.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an artist, actor, and songwriter. I think my music touches people through the narratives woven in the music itself. My songs consist of real stories, situations I’ve been through, and how I really got it out the mud. These things are all displayed together with lyrical depth and emotional honesty.
I think I most proud of the fact that I didn’t quit. No matter the setbacks, no matter the pressure, I kept pushing. Breaking through those barriers opened doors I once only dreamed about, and it showed me that resilience and hard work are just as important as talent in this business.
What separates me from other artists is my ability to move between introspection and valuable jewels I picked up in the streets. I can be vulnerable and still talk that talk; I can give you the story and the swagger in the same song. I really have a passion for this music and that passion pushed me to study the greats across every genre—examining their discipline, their creative processes, and the intentionality behind the music they created that shaped generations. That dedication to the craft is what fuels me and keeps my sound evolving.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I feel like success is becoming the highest version of yourself—through discipline, love, and purpose—and using that growth to elevate the people and the world around you.
