Today we’d like to introduce you to Luisa Fernanda Tamayo.
Hi Luisa Fernanda, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m Colombian, 29 years old, and I started my business in 2022.
I moved to Los Cabos in 2019 after falling in love, but when I arrived, the relationship changed and ended a year later. A month after that, the pandemic began. I took any work I could find — as a hostess, model, and brand ambassador. It was fun, but it wasn’t the income or the future I wanted.
I’ve always been ambitious, so I studied marketing and later photography. I eventually got an office job from 8 to 5, and I would skip my lunch break so I could leave early and make it to my sunset photo sessions. I did both for a while, but I never enjoyed working for other people. I wanted independence, freedom, and a work environment where women felt safe and respected.
That’s when I decided to build something of my own — a business that would support women. At first, I didn’t fully realize it, but over time, as my business grew, I began hiring and subcontracting mostly women. I love being able to give them opportunities to earn their own income and have more freedom, even if they have families or other responsibilities. I believe financial independence gives women security and options in a world where circumstances can change quickly.
Eventually, my photography business grew enough for me to quit my full-time job. I applied everything I learned in marketing, built a strong social media presence, and turned my passion into a career. Today, I have a thriving business, an amazing community, and the ability to provide work for others — especially women — in a way that empowers them, just like this journey empowered me.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road.
Los Cabos is a beautiful luxury destination, and many people visit for engagements, weddings, and family trips. Because of that, competition is strong.
At the beginning, I faced situations where people wanted to “work with me” only to try to take my clients. I also collaborated with influencers who didn’t tag or credit me, even after working for free. Recognition is essential in this industry, so I learned to protect myself by setting clear expectations and using collaboration agreements. This solved most of those issues.
Another challenge was managing myself as my own boss. The freedom to take a day off or wake up late can easily become a lack of structure. Creating a consistent routine — starting early, setting work hours, and staying organized with deliveries — helped me build discipline and grow my business steadily.
Overall, these obstacles taught me the importance of boundaries, professionalism, and protecting the value of my work.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a photographer and creative director based in Los Cabos, specializing in lifestyle, couples, maternity, engagement, and destination photography.
What I’m known for is capturing warm, emotional, editorial-style images in some of the most iconic beaches and landscapes in Cabo. I focus on creating an experience, not just a photoshoot — helping clients feel confident, comfortable, and guided every step of the way.
One of the things that sets my work apart is the way I blend storytelling with natural light and the unique colors of Cabo’s sunsets. I direct, style, and plan each session intentionally so every gallery feels cinematic and personal. I’ve also built a strong online presence, and clients often find me because my work has a recognizable look: elegant, vibrant, romantic, and very authentic.
I’m most proud of the business I’ve built from the ground up and of the community around it. Today, I’m able to hire and collaborate with other creatives — especially women — and help them build their own financial independence. My work combines creativity with empowerment, and that’s something that motivates me every day.
What truly differentiates me is the level of care, consistency, communication, and guidance I bring to each session. My clients don’t just get photos — they get an experience that makes them feel celebrated and seen.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
In my life and business, I don’t believe in luck — I believe in God’s timing.
In 2023, a year after starting my business, I made the decision to give my life to God and get baptized. Since then, I’ve tried to align every part of my life with my purpose and with the path He has for me. I genuinely believe that every opportunity, every client, and every door that has opened has been because of His grace. All the glory belongs to Him.
At the same time, I’ve done my part. I wake up early, stay disciplined, remain consistent, and put my heart into my work every single day. I’ve shown up even when things were hard. But I see my effort as the seed — and God as the one who brings the growth.
So when I think about “luck,” I don’t see it as good or bad luck. I see it as God guiding me, protecting me, and placing me exactly where I need to be, while I put in the work to honor the opportunities He gives me.
