Today we’d like to introduce you to Craig Decker.
Hi craig, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I have been a hobbiest wood worker all my life ( woodshop ) in high school etc. I started a restaurant chain called ” the wine guy bistro ” in 2005 where I built all the tables /wine racks and bars for 7 locations over 12 years . Which was a concept with a full wine shop with 3500 brands and a full service restaurant in the middle of the wine shop . With 260 employees it taxed my health with only 4 of us running the whole organization . We sold off several locations and close leases ending our run and left the business in 2016. My dad passed in 2017 leaving a modest work shop that I bought from my mom so she could bury my dad. Shortly after I made my first river table out of epoxy . Since that we increased the shop size three times and moved to North Ga 3 years ago . My wifes whole family is from Cleveland Ga. So we came home for family ! My associate who works for me Jack and I make about 120 pieces a year mostly all custom pieces. But have a showroom in Clarkesville Ga with 70 pieces for sale with our Work shop in back where we make everything . We specialize in Liveedge furniture . Mostly tables beds and wine racks . No bark , just rustic refined furniture that will last generations . We make old dead stuff shine again
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The most difficult challenge with our small business is getting people to know we exist as an option to big box furniture . Most people won’t walk into a place to get a custom piece made because they are intimidated . Our process really is a walk around looking at stunning pieces picking colors and leg types after we talk about size. You can be involved as mush or as little as you want .
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am the head craftsman owner of deadwood tables . We’re small company making hand crafted tables beds wine racks and pub tables . It’s a place with a comfortable vibe surrounded by stunning pieces of all shapes and sizes. We create pieces that you’ve dreamed of . Visit our site if your looking for a piece to fit a specific spot , Odds are we can make it for you.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was a kid who grew up in a small business . My dad like his father before him owned a power equipment business . I grew up in the business. Bus picked me up and dropped us off there. I spent my childhood working on small engines mini bike as go carts. My hands were always busy. I’m not a scholar I’m a visionary, I see and try to make things happen . “There has to be a better way”
