Life & Work with Matthew of Midtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew.

Hi Matthew, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Florida and eventually found my way to Savannah in my early twenties, which is where I met the guys in Perpetual Groove. We crossed paths at an open-mic night, hit it off musically, and things moved fast from there. I joined the band, and before long, we were touring constantly — vans, late nights, long drives, and a growing community that kept us going.

We settled in Athens and spent the next 25 years building this thing show by show. We’ve been through every phase a band can go through, but the heart of it has always stayed the same: we love playing together, and we love the people who show up for it.

Now we’re gearing up to celebrate 25 years, kicking it off with our New Year’s Eve show at Terminal West. It’s a full-circle moment, and we’re grateful to still be doing what we do.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not always a smooth road. Twenty-five years is a long time for any band, and we’ve had just about every kind of challenge you can imagine — lineup changes, burnout, personal struggles, financial ups and downs, even taking a full hiatus at one point. There were stretches where it felt like we were holding things together with duct tape and good intentions.

But the thing that kept us going was the community around the band and the fact that, at the end of the day, we still loved playing together. Every time we got back in a room or stepped on stage, it felt like, “Yeah… this is still worth fighting for.”
The tough moments shaped us just as much as the wins, and honestly, they’re a big part of why hitting 25 years feels so meaningful.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a keyboard player with PGroove. I’m mostly known for bringing a mix of synth textures, piano lines, and ambient layers that help shape the band’s sound. One of the things that’s always set PGroove apart is the blend — we’re not strictly a jam band, not strictly rock, not strictly electronic, not strictly indie… but somehow all of those things at once. The keys ended up being a big part of that spacey, emotional, cinematic side of the music.

What I’m most proud of is the longevity and the connection we’ve built with fans. It’s rare for a band to still be here 25 years later, still putting everything we’ve got into the shows, and still seeing familiar faces in the crowd. We’ve always cared about creating moments — those songs that hit you emotionally, or those live stretches where everything locks in, and you can feel the whole room come alive.

At the end of the day, that’s what we do: help create those moments. And that’s what sets this band apart — we’ve always been willing to evolve, experiment, and follow the music wherever it wants to go as directed by that symbiotic relationship we have with the audience both on and off the stage.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
If I had to pick one quality, it’s probably perseverance. In a band, especially one that tours as much as we have, you’re going to hit a lot of highs and lows. The thing that’s kept us moving is just showing up — for the music, for each other, and for the people who come to the shows.

Right behind that is the ability to listen. Not just musically, but personally. You learn how to give space, how to adapt, how to grow together instead of apart. That’s been a huge part of why we’re still here 25 years later.
