Meet Rev. Brittany And Céshia “Queen Phierce” Powell of Free Lyfe Ministries, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rev. Brittany And Céshia “Queen Phierce” Powell.

Hi Rev. Brittany and Céshia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Brittany Michelle Powell, M.Div., graduated from Spelman College in 2007 with the intention of entering into Pre-Law. The recession in 2008 shifted her dreams of becoming an attorney and led her to volunteer with her former church’s prison ministry. This set her on a divine path to meet a chaplain. This inspired her seminary journey to later become a certified Chaplain Educator and have her own spiritual care practice.

After 15 years as a special needs educator, Céshia Elmore-Powell, M.Ed. shifted to grassroots activism in 2020 in response to state-sanctioned and patriarchal violence against Black women and trans people. Transforming grief into action, as a concerned community member, she co-led a March for Justice with a regional Reproductive Justice organization, where she now serves as Community Organizing and Engagement Manager. In this role, she has led mutual aid efforts, facilitated leadership development, testified at public hearings, and created workshops advancing Reproductive Justice. This motivated her to achieve a certificate in Nonprofit Executive Leadership, as well as become a member of the Board of Directors for Philadelphia Black Gay Pride.

Céshia and Brittany crossed paths in late 2021, discovering that they shared a passion for healing their community and honoring their identities as Black and Queer women. As their romantic connection grew, so did their passion for social justice. They married in September 2025, an act of love and resistance. Brittany is a spiritual care practitioner and consultant, helping people navigate and process their grief and loss, gain clarity on their identity, and reach their highest potential. Céshia is an educator, activist, and artist, intersecting her passion for art, poetry, and reproductive justice through performance, facilitation, and writing.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Brittany notes financial barriers as a first-generation college graduate, processing her queer identity with family and colleagues, and advocating for equitable compensation as a Black, queer woman. As someone who is an ordained minister, preacher, and Queer person, she had to learn what parts of her being were suppressed because of her religious identity, which took deep discovery of learning who she is outside of her preacher title. Also, she names navigating grief and loss of family members, which is why she can help others through this process in order to move forward with their lives.

Céshia notes that her challenges were related to her personal healing. Her work as an organizer called for deep reflection and care of self so she could show up for community in a greater capacity. She says that self-care is community care, and you can only pour from your overflow. What’s in the cup is for you. Also, organizing was a brand-new lane, professionally. Although it derived from passion, there was so much to learn and understand to build trust and serve the community she loves.

As a couple, they navigate their challenges from a place of power as they support one another in their personal focuses as well as what they are building together.
