We recently had the chance to connect with Shirley Su and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning Shirley, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
It is the discovery of brand new cooking ingredient combinations. Recently, I tried mixing chopped-up beef sticks or beef jerkies into scrambled egg and it came out amazing! Just be sure to not season or season it minimally because the flavors of the beef sticks/jerkies will be absorbed by the eggs. Many may argue with me on this but I feel scrambled eggs, tofu, noodles, pasta, oatmeals, rice, or many other carbohydrates are food items which can be twisted in so many ways. The sky is the limit! Did I ever mention I also love oatmeals?
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am Shirley Su, an illustrator/designer who works in both vector and non-vector style utilizing colors and at times, texture. My work features people, animals and beyond. It also ranges from minimalistic to soothing colorful light-hearted illustrations. I believe versatility is my strength in fulfilling the vision of each of my client’s projects. At the moment, I am in the middle of expanding my pet and non-pet portrait commission clientele. For example, family (or non-family) Christmas cards. Your support will be appreciated.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I used to believe I had to achieve the ultimate perfection in everything I do, however now I believe it can possibly do more harm than good. I value honesty and progression more.
When you were sad or scared as a child, what helped?
Aside from support and empathy from friends and family members, what helped me was manga, anime, art, writing, and music.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What truths are so foundational in your life that you rarely articulate them?
Off the top of my head, I believe people cannot save money and time at the same time.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
It is when I am relaxing at home or in bed right after shower.
