Today we’d like to introduce you to Cheysi Camacho.
Hi Cheysi, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always known I wanted to be a hairstylist. All throughout high school I was coloring my friends’ hair—and my own. (Apologies to the ones I messed up in the early days!) In 2015, I finally took the leap and enrolled in cosmetology school. I worked a 9–5 and attended classes in the evenings, determined to make it happen. I graduated in the fall of 2016 and began assisting at an Aveda salon. It felt like the start of everything I had been working toward. And honestly, that was just the beginning.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth road. Cosmetology school is expensive, so balancing tuition while helping with bills at home was tough. Then, after graduating, I quickly learned that a license doesn’t mean your career takes off right away. It took a couple of years of assisting before I started building my own clientele. It’s truly a process. But every part of the journey taught me to keep growing, keep learning, and stay patient. Now, at my third salon, I’ve really blossomed into the stylist I always knew I could be.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in lived-in color—blondes, brunettes, and vivids. It’s a low-maintenance, natural look with a seamless grow-out that can last for months. I’m most known for my balayages, which is funny because when I first started doing hair, I was terrified of balayages. Now it’s one of my favorite techniques.
What sets me apart is how customized my approach is. One reference photo is not one-size-fits-all. I consider how my clients style their hair daily, how much maintenance they want, and what will truly complement their lifestyle. I believe your color should be tailored to you.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I believe growth doesn’t happen without taking risks—that’s true in life and in this industry. As hairstylists, we take risks every day because both hair and people can be unpredictable.
One of the biggest risks I’ve taken was changing salons. Stepping out of my comfort zone was scary because moving locations always comes with the possibility of losing clients. Convenience matters, and rebuilding a clientele is never easy. But I also knew I needed to make choices that pushed me forward. No risk, no reward—and every step has led me closer to the stylist I want to be.
