Conversations with Kevin Scene Lewis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Scene Lewis.

Hi Kevin Scene , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Born in Youngstown, Ohio but raised in the tidewater area of southeastern Virginia. He was always considered an artist, since he’d rather draw and doodle than anything else (especially during school). Drawing comics led to spray paint and graffiti, and eventually to Virginia Commonwealth University where he received a degree in Communication Arts with an emphasis in Illustration.

His artworks are based on formal associations, which open a unique visual opportunity. By emphasizing aesthetics, he tries to develop forms that do not follow logical criteria, but are based only on subjective associations and formal parallels, which incite the viewer to make new personal associations.

As of late his own “Mission Statement” is to illustrate and create visuals to accompany and enhance an experience. Whether it be with music or reading a book, when an image can invoke a lasting feeling, mission accomplished.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
What some may call challenges or obstacles are opportunities. I like to think of every experience is just that, learn from it and move on. I understand everything happens at its own time and Its your frame of mind that dictates your reality. One example is when I had left Virginia in 98 and decided to move to California to chase money and fame. (Lol) My car broke down in Kansas, I had to make a pit stop in California. While I was there i sold my first painting and really thought i had arrived. Well, I didn’t sell anything else for the next year and it was a truly humbling experience. Still i was supposed to be there i met my wife and we eventually lived and travelled all over the world so I have no complaints.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As of late in the Middle Georgia area I am more known for my mural work. Still I think I specialize in faces and portraiture in a surreal space. I would have to say that when I lived in the DMV area I had one of my live paintings inducted into the Smithsonian Museum of African American History accompanying the James “J-Dilla” exhibit. That one event was such an affirmation to stay on my art path that lead me to my passion and art residency at the National Hip Hop Museum in Washington DC.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Patience while I wanted all these things to happen right after I had graduated, I take a look back and I am amazed and had no idea where my art would take me.
