Today we’d like to introduce you to Imari Havard.
Hi Imari, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
In 2007 I created a nightlife concept called PlayDate. It was a game night for adults that was designed to cater to those who were tired of the “same old” club and bar scene in Atlanta. We simply combined classic board games, video games and interactive games (childhood classics like Musical Chairs, Hula Hoops and Simon Says) along with music, dancing, food/drink and laughter. Our attendance quickly grew from 80 people at our launch event to over 1000 at each monthly event. Soon we were getting inquiries from people in other cities asking when we would bring it there, so at that point I created a company to expand the concept.
With the help of my business partners, we quickly expanded from just being in Atlanta to 31 cities across the nation. We designed a licensing program that allowed others to somewhat purchase a “franchise” of our concept and brand. Soon, we were entertaining thousands around the country every month under the brand PlayDate.
By 2009 our popularity captured the attention of corporate sponsors. Ford Motor Company contracted us to engage on their behalf as a sponsor on large cruise ships, national conferences and other major events. Our playful and fun approach had become an effective marketing tool. PlayDate had evolved to a boutique marketing firm that landed clients like Ford, Home Depot, American Cancer Society, Coca Cola and more. We became recognized as one of the best marketing agencies for consumer engagement around the country.
By 2019 we we’re seeing huge success growing into a multimillion-dollar company…then in the Spring of 2020 the COVID pandemic ended everything. With the cancelation of ALL large events that year, we lost all of our clients. Without many options, we later dissolved the company and I made a pivot into real estate investments.
I found a mentor (Justin Giles of Real Estate Gurus) and learn how to purchase, renovate and sell property. As a self-taught home renovations contractor I was able to successfully flip nearly a dozen homes in the metro-Atlanta area. At the age of 50 I was able to purchase my dream car (a Ferrari) and build a custom home for my wife.
Today, I am working on several projects including launching an annual destination trip in partnership with Tommy Miles (“Nephew Tommy” of The Steve Harvey Morning Show and OWN’s Ready To Love reality TV series). While there have been many challenges, hardships and obstacles, I continue to strive for happiness in doing what I love. With the support of friends, family and those who believe in your dream, anything is possible.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. I have experienced financial difficulties, lawsuits, betrayal, natural disasters and more. Mental health is something that many men are challenged with during these kind of tough times, so I relied heavily on GOD to get me through.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I consider myself an “artist” because I am a true creative. While I do have the natural talent to be able to paint and draw, my creative mind has allowed me to start businesses that are out of the norm and offer a unique approach. From fun and playful events to creating murals to producing interactive comedy shows… I never stop creating.
I am most proud of being able to make people smile, laugh and create everlasting memories.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
One of the most important lessons that I have learned is that true success takes a team. It is virtually impossible to do it all by yourself. Surround yourself with talent and people that desire to succeed.
