Meet IAMFLUX of COSTA RICA

Today we’d like to introduce you to IAMFLUX.

Hi IAMFLUX, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Well, I got my first drumset at 3 years old. I had been showing a pure interest in percussion since a baby so my parents acted on that. From there, I was always in music classes throughout grade school and then the marching band, playing the tenor drum, in high school. Throughout that time I was in PG County, Maryland. While still in high school, I moved back to my hometown, Saint Pete, Florida. Soon after, I began to get a name in the school for drumming on the tables in the cafeteria. It would always be a crowd, wether I was drumming for rappers or battling other drummers ( I never lost a battle LMFAO ). I eventually bought a casio keyboard and created a buzz outside of school for live finger drumming in the streets of the neighborhood. I started learning about sequencing and eventually was given an opportunity in a popular local studio ( Stylish Studios ) as a producer. I came up with the name KritiKaal and gained local popularity for making beats for all the in-house artists and other local rappers. Fast forward, I began to take interest in singing and began to persue my artistry. At that time, I signed a deal with a label out of Tampa, and they felt like my sound and image should mirror that of Trey Songz and Tank. So they switched my artist name to K. Thomas. I quickly realized they didn’t have the needed resources or vision for what I wanted to do so I got out of the deal. I kept the name and partnered with a close friend as my manager and hit the ground running independantly. After almost 2 years of performing, opening for other artists, and gaining local radio play I decided it was time to go back to the name FLUX, which was the original name I had chosen for my artistry. I began to explore the darker, spacey sound of synth leads, pads, and hella reverb LOL. Fast forward again to now, and that brings me to where I am today, both as an artist and music producer.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road, atleast not consistently. Persuing music in any form comes with it’s struggles, especially when you’re aiming to make a profession out of it. As I mentioned earlier, I’ve had several different names as a producer and artist. What I didn’t mention was all of the internal tug of wars as a music creator that is multifaceted. Having undiagnosed ADHD for the majority of my journey only amplified those struggles. Knowing that I’ve always been good enough to become successful within either of those facets was never the issue. One of those challenges was being able to stay focused on just one creative project or venture at a time. Another one was being overwhelmed with all of the outside validation and guidance that were almost always in the opposite direction of what I wanted, or what I was already focused on. The industry also comes with it’s own set of challenges that are a b!tch in itself Lmao..

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
So, in current time I’ve embraced the ADHD and have since learned how to juggle more efficiently. I focused my music production mostly towards tv and film. With doing that, I now have around 20 sync placements on BET+. As I stated before, I love the darker spacey sound so my music in general reflects that. Within those sync placements, is a song fo mine, entitled ‘Exotika’, which is also the title of my new EP. The project itself could definitely be the musical backdrop for a dark and sexy thriller, so I’m working on getting placements that fit the aesthetic. In totality, ANYthing that I work on as an artist will be done so with the intent to pull the listener into the space that I’m in. With EXOTIKA, I’m pulling you into the space of questioning your reality, sexual exploration; ‘Welcome to the darkside’ type vibes. I will always aim to open the mind, to challenge stale perspectives, and to be an example of someone looking to grow and expand in whatever space I’m in.
