Today we’d like to introduce you to Aiko Guillen.
Hi Aiko, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started my business because I’ve always loved customer service. When I was younger working in restaurants, the best part of my day was seeing people’s moods change just from the way I treated them. Watching someone walk in one way and leave feeling better always lifted me too , but I knew restaurant work wasn’t where I wanted to stay forever.
During some of my own hard moments, beauty services like getting my hair, nails, lashes, or a facial always made me feel renewed, lighter, and more myself again. That made something click: I wanted to stay in customer service, but in a space where I could provide the same kind of confidence and comfort that helped me.
That’s what pushed me to go to esthetician school and officially get licensed. Along the way, I realized how meaningful this work is not just the service itself, but the connection. When people come for a facial or lashes, it’s their time to breathe, think, relax, or even vent. Some clients open up about things they can’t tell others, and some just enjoy the quiet. Either way, you become part of their routine, their safe space, and their transformation.
My business grew from that: wanting to help people feel beautiful, supported, and lighter than when they walked in. And over time, my clients became more than clients ; they became people I genuinely care about and feel grateful to serve.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of my biggest challenges was balancing school, work, building my clientele, and being a mom to a 2 year old . Nothing was consistent at first, and trying to juggle business and personal life felt overwhelming. I also had to learn how to set boundaries, because once clients feel comfortable, they sometimes forget you’re not always available. On top of that, keeping up with posting, scheduling, payments, supplies, and maintaining a perfectly clean workspace was a lot to manage. But those challenges taught me discipline, confidence, and how to stand firmly behind my business and my worth.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
People know my business for helping clients feel refreshed and confident. I specialize in lash extensions and customized facials, and I’m a licensed esthetician known for being detailed, clean, and gentle. What I’m most proud of is the trust and comfort I’ve built clients come to me not just for the service, but for the experience. My brand is all about relaxation, real care and place where you can feel like yourself, pampered, boosted, and more importantly confident. I’m committed to giving every client a space where they feel heard, comfortable, and truly taken care of
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
My advice for finding a mentor is to look for someone in your field who genuinely inspires you and is willing to share their knowledge. For me, that was my cousin, who is also an esthetician and an acne specialist. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or learn from someone who’s already been through the steps you’re trying to take. With networking, start local and stay consistent. My partner, who is a barber, showed me how powerful it is to connect with other small businesses, use social media, and even pass out business cards. Friends and family with their own brands can also offer great advice because they understand the real struggles of growing a clientele.
And honestly, you’re going to fail sometimes that’s normal. But there’s always someone who can lift you up. I’m always open to helping anyone who wants to start, because we’ve all been at the bottom before rising.
