Today we’d like to introduce you to Sydney Johnson.
Hi Sydney, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey in the beauty industry started long before I ever realized it would become my purpose. I’ve always loved creating, transforming, and helping people feel confident, but it wasn’t until I began doing hair consistently that I understood how naturally it came to me. Over time, what started as a passion grew into a career path, and eventually a brand.
Becoming a master cosmetologist allowed me to bring all my skills together such as hair, nails, and lashes, which is giving me the room to one day build a one-stop shop salon similar to the one i run today. I currently specialize in quickweaves, ponytails, retwists, etc, and I’ve worked hard to create an experience where clients feel comfortable, cared for, and confident when they walk out. My goal has always been bigger than just providing services; I want every person who sits in my chair to feel seen and leave feeling better than when they came in.
Outside the salon, I’m pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Psychology, with the long-term goal of becoming a lawyer and eventually owning my own law firm while also turning my hair business into a franchisee. Balancing beauty and law might seem unexpected, but both paths allow me to help people, uplift them, and make a real impact.
Everything I’ve built so far reflects my passion, my creativity, and my drive. I’m proud of how far I’ve come, and I’m even more excited for what’s next, expanding my business, franchising my salon, and continuing to inspire confidence in every client I meet.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Building my business has taken a lot of patience, discipline, and growing up faster than I expected. One of the biggest challenges was learning how to balance everything at once — school, work, my faith, my personal life, and the pressure to show up for everyone around me. There were moments where I felt like I was pouring into people who weren’t pouring back into me, and that drained my motivation at times.
I also faced the typical struggles of being a young entrepreneur: inconsistent income, learning how to budget, managing clients, and trying to stand out in a crowded industry. On top of that, I’ve had to work through self-doubt — the feeling that I wasn’t enough or that people wouldn’t support me the way I supported them. Those moments pushed me to build thicker skin and trust myself more.
But every challenge taught me something. It forced me to get organized, get serious about my craft, and stay focused on my goals. I learned how to set boundaries, protect my peace, and stay committed even when things felt heavy. The road hasn’t been smooth, but it’s definitely made me stronger, wiser, and more confident in the direction I’m headed.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a Licensed master cosmetologist and the owner of a one-stop beauty business that offers luxury hair services. I specialize in quickweaves, ponytails, retwists, etc — the styles that require both precision and creativity. I love transforming someone’s look in a way that feels effortless for them but showcases the skill and detail behind the scenes.
I’m known for being fast, clean, and consistent. My clients trust me because I listen, I care about the health of their hair, and I give them styles that fit their lifestyle — not just what’s trending. I’m also known for creating a comfortable, welcoming environment where people feel like they can relax, vent, laugh, or just breathe for a moment.
What I’m most proud of is the fact that I built this from the ground up at a young age. I worked hard to earn my Master Cosmetologist license, and I’m now building a brand that reflects both my professionalism and my passion. I’m also proud of how I balance beauty with my education — studying Criminal Justice and Psychology while running a business isn’t easy, but it shows my drive to help people in more than one way.
What sets me apart is my combination of skill, speed, and heart. I don’t just do hair — I create confidence. I pour into my clients the same way I pour into my craft. And I’m constantly learning, improving, and planning for the future, including franchising my salon. My work is personal to me, and that passion shows in every service I do.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
A few resources really help me stay grounded, motivated, and focused both in my business and in my personal life. The Bible app is a big one for me — whether it’s a quick verse or a devotional, it helps me reset, stay centered, and keep my faith at the front of everything I do.
For business and mindset, I like listening to short motivational podcasts and clips that focus on discipline, entrepreneurship, and elevation. They remind me to stay consistent, stay hungry, and not get discouraged when things feel stressful. I also follow a lot of hairstylists and creators who share tips, trends, and business advice; seeing other people in my industry grow keeps me inspired to keep leveling up.
And honestly, sometimes the best “resource” is taking time away from my phone and just having quiet time to think. Those moments help me come back sharper, more creative, and more focused on the goals I’m working toward.
