Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaja Ledbetter.
Hi Jaja, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started writing music very young, around the age of five. It began with poetry, and from there it just snowballed. I’ve always loved singing, writing, rapping, and poetry all of it. Music is what truly makes my heart pump. It’s how I express myself, how I process life, and how I connect with people.
My artist name is Asè From The South. I started making music honestly as a way to cope and make sense of what was going on around me. Before I ever thought about releasing anything, I was just writing processing life, relationships, family, faith, struggle, and the world I was growing up in. Music became my outlet before it became a goal.
Over time, I realized that storytelling was my strength. I wasn’t interested in chasing trends I wanted my music to feel real and say something. A lot of my songs come straight from lived experiences and observations, whether that’s navigating systems, personal growth, or trying to stay grounded while still dreaming bigger. Writing helps me turn heavy moments into something meaningful.
Where I am now, I’m more focused than ever on my craft and my voice. I’m learning discipline, consistency, and trusting my perspective. I see music as documentation of who I was, who I’m becoming, and what I’ve survived. I’m still building, but I’m doing it intentionally and staying true to myself, which matters more to me than anything.
My artist name, Asè from the South, is deeply rooted in who I am. Being Southern isn’t just where I’m from it’s in my DNA, my bloodline, and my spirit. Asè represents power, intention, and manifestation, and pairing it with “from the South” honors my roots, my ancestry, and the culture that shaped me. Everything I create is a reflection of where I come from and the generations before me it’s embodied, not performed.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many artists, I’ve had to navigate personal loss, financial pressure, self-doubt, and moments where survival had to come before creativity. I’ve experienced periods of burnout, being misunderstood, and feeling like my voice was overlooked or undervalued not just in music, but in life.
Being a woman in this industry comes with its own set of obstacles. I’ve had to push through being underestimated, having my talent questioned, being boxed into expectations about how I should look, sound, or move, and dealing with spaces that don’t always feel welcoming or safe. There’s also the constant pressure to prove yourself twice as hard just to be taken seriously.
Still, those struggles shaped my pen. They gave my music weight, honesty, and purpose. Every obstacle taught me resilience, discipline, and how to turn pain into something meaningful.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work lives at the intersection of storytelling, soul, and Southern grit. I specialize in raw, honest music that blends rap, melody, and poetry music that feels lived-in. I’m known for my pen first and foremost. I write from real experiences, real emotions, and real environments, and I don’t water that down for trends.
What I’m most proud of is my ability to be vulnerable and powerful at the same time. I can make music that cuts deep but still feels relatable, reflective, and intentional. Whether I’m speaking on love, betrayal, survival, spirituality, or identity, my goal is always to make people feel something and see themselves in it.
What sets me apart is my voice not just vocally, but creatively. I don’t separate who I am from my art. My Southern roots, my spirituality, my womanhood, and my life experiences all show up in my music naturally. I’m not trying to sound like anyone else; I’m building my own lane and trusting my intuition and my pen to guide it.
