Conversations with Eric Burgess

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric Burgess.

Hi eric, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
my artist name si EMBEX. I was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey, and began DJing at 13, building on a musical foundation passed down from my father. I started with a pair of Technics 1200s, a Vestax mixer, and a growing collection of hip-hop, house, and techno records so most of my influences were benny benassi, skrillex and deadmau5.. Over the next several years after turning 17, I focused on developing my skills in mixing, turntablism, and production and have span music for music videos, reality shows to even catholic churches.

Shortly after i moved on my own, I was signed to a talent agency, recognized for my clean transitions, quick track manipulation, and ability to move between soulful, deep sounds and high-energy selections.

In the years that followed, I performed consistently throughout the Southeast, which led to a summer 2013 tour across Atlanta, Dallas, Miami, Los Angeles, and New York City. My experience ranges from underground rave and EDM events to festival stages, where I’ve shared lineups with artists such as Cookie Monsta, Midnight Panda, Hyperion, Mantis, Caked Up, MK Ultra, Eddie Gold, and others.

These performances led to releases with labels including Red Alpha, Revelations, Pro Logic, Ultraphonix, and Underground Syndicate, producing tracks such as “Some Action,” “Chemical X,” “Kill or B Killed,” and “Hunt Demon.” I’ve also received endorsements from Endorphin Apparel, Auroravizion, and Powerhouse Music, and have been featured in outlets like EDM Nightlife Las Vegas, as well as becoming the first DJ/producer featured in Hardly a Premier First Magazine.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
it was rough. after moving out on the streets i choose music over a stable everyday job and decided that i would live off of the money i made off djing and dealt with all the caveats that come with that. somedays going without eating and getting paid $50 a night for 8 hours of work it was brutal but i always kept a dedicated fan base through always putting myself out there.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
i am self taught so i learned everything i know in fl studio from scratch as well as learning more tools of the trade from other artist along the way. i taught myself also how to play the guitar, how to play piano and how to play bass guitar and how to so vocals. i mainly do death metal and some pop but mainly sad rock or heavy rock genres are my forte.

im most proud of just the self growth i had from my years of dedication from learning the craft and that people enjoy what i have made so far. what sets me apart is im always looking for other ways to blend rock genres with dubstep. thats mainly my forte. so shoegaze/dubstep, death metal/dubstep etv.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
networking and changing up your music. if you keep pumping out the same tunes over and over again, people are going to get tired of you real fast as they already know what to expect
