Today we’d like to introduce you to Keva McCray.
Hi Keva, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey started at the intersection of grief and community. What began as a personal blog during a period of grief and mental health challenges quickly became a space for healing, reflection, and honest expression. Writing was initially a way for me to find peace, but over time, that outlet evolved into something much larger.
As the platform grew, I began sharing my passions through meaningful conversations with voices that are often overlooked, particularly independent artists. That evolution led to the creation of Unruly Plug, where storytelling, culture, and community intersect.
Through the podcast and my media work, I’ve been able to address uncomfortable but necessary conversations within the Black community while still creating content that is engaging, uplifting, and rooted in positivity. At its core, everything I create is about connection, healing, and giving people space to be seen and heard.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As a one-woman team, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Building something rooted in purpose while navigating grief, mental health, and real-life responsibilities comes with its own set of challenges. There were moments of self-doubt, burnout, and learning how to balance vulnerability with leadership.
On the business side, access and visibility were major hurdles. Independent platforms, especially those centered on Black voices and independent artists, don’t always receive the same support or resources as mainstream outlets. I had to learn how to wear multiple hats: producer, marketer, editor, strategist, often without a blueprint.
What kept me moving forward was the clarity of mission. Every obstacle forced me to refine my voice, strengthen my boundaries, and build with intention rather than urgency. Those struggles didn’t slow the vision; they shaped it.
As you know, we’re big fans of UnrulyPlug LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
At its core, Unruly Plug is both a platform and a production company built around intentional storytelling. We create space for independent artists, creators, and brands to be seen, heard, and presented professionally, especially those who are often overlooked by traditional media.
Through the podcast, I specialize in thoughtful, culture-driven conversations that spotlight independent musicians while also addressing real, sometimes uncomfortable topics within the Black community. I believe entertainment and education don’t have to be separate, and that meaningful dialogue can still be engaging, relatable, and affirming.
On the production side, my media company offers strategic content creation and media services designed to help artists and entrepreneurs show up with clarity and confidence. What sets UnrulyPlug apart is our people-first approach. We don’t just produce content; we help our clients understand their narrative, their audience, and how to move with intention in a crowded digital space.
Brand-wise, what I’m most proud of is the trust we’ve built. UnrulyPlug has become known as a safe, respectful, and credible space where stories are handled with care and authenticity. For readers, I want them to know that this brand is about more than visibility. It’s about community, integrity, and building platforms that truly reflect the voices behind them.
Any big plans?
Moving forward, I’m excited to expand UnrulyPlug beyond digital media and into live experiences. One of my key goals is to begin hosting showcases for independent artists, creating intentional spaces where talent can be experienced in real time while building genuine connections between artists, audiences, and industry peers.
At the same time, those showcases won’t exist without context. I plan to continue centering the tough but necessary conversations that impact our community, particularly within the Black creative space, whether that’s mental health, sustainability, ownership, or navigating the industry independently. The goal is to merge culture, conversation, and community in a way that feels authentic and impactful.
This next phase is about building ecosystems, not just platforms. I want Unruly Plug to be a place where artists are celebrated, challenged, supported, and given room to grow, both creatively and personally.
