Meet Matilda Miranda of Powder springs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matilda Miranda.

Matilda, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always been surrounded by creatives since a very young age, and have been drawing ever since I could hold a pencil. Growing up my mother taught me arts and crafts, she was also creative in her own way, but didn’t know much about drawing. When I first started getting into drawing as a kid I would ask her to help me draw something but the only thing she could draw was a stick man. She and other relatives would constantly take me to art museums and would be one of the biggest inspiration to pursue a career in illustration.

I was born in Cochamba, Bolivia where I lived until I was three and then moved to the United States. Currently , I’m a senior at Scad atlanta, where I have had the opportunity to meet amazing people who continue to inspire me everyday on my journey.

Today, I continue to work towards my goal of working in illustration industry. My work leans heavily towards a whimsical and nature aesthetic. I’m interested in many of illustration, but my main focus is book and advertising illustration.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My road so far has definitely not been smooth. When I originally enrolled at scad I was majoring in both animation and illustration. I quickly realized that animation was not for me when I tried to animate a twelve second clip and could not animate whatsoever . I ended up dropping the major after taking only few classes. At the same as illustration major I was concentrating on concept art to go along with my animation major. I ended changing to concentrate on publication when a professor told me my style would fit children’s books. Since then I have been working towards becoming a children’s book illustrator.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an illustrator, and I specialize in book and advertising illustration, but I have also dabbled in editorial and motion media. My work tends to lean in the whimsical and fantasy side. I draw a lot of inspiration from nature, books and fashion.

One of the prominent aspects of my illustrations is the linework, as well the textures I add to my work. I love to add extra detail to objects in my composition which are different than the rest and it adds to the narrative.

What I’m most proud of is how my style has evolved over these last years , and how it’s made it recognized and sets it apart from others artists. I’m also really proud of one my personal projects, an illustrated version of “The Sea Fairies“ by L. Frank Baum.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Any career has its own struggles and that is definitely true when pursuing a career in the arts. Now as I am beginning to work on my career and starting my business and finding clients I know there will be challenges but the key not to give up or doubt my work. Doubt is something many people face when starting out, but by pushing past it, I’m confident there is a place in the world where my art belongs. I am also now in the midst of working on a book that hopefully I can share it with the world soon.
