Exploring Life & Business with Dr. Candice Cooper-Lovett of A New Creation Psychotherapy Services LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Candice Cooper-Lovett.

Hi Dr. Candice, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I founded A New Creation Psychotherapy in 2015 after a pivotal conversation with a colleague who shared very plainly that starting a private practice was far more accessible than I had been led to believe. Hearing that from someone with the same credentials as me shifted my perspective and gave me permission to move forward. What began as a realization quickly turned into action. I launched the practice intentionally and humbly, starting with a part-time administrative assistant to support scheduling, emails, and phone calls while I focused on clinical care and building a strong foundation. As a Black woman-owned practice, growth was rooted in community trust, word of mouth, and a commitment to culturally responsive, ethical, and affirming mental health care.

Today, A New Creation Psychotherapy is a collaborative and holistic group practice of five team members, including three therapists myself included. I am an AAMFT Approved Supervisor, and another therapist on the team is also an AAMFT Approved Supervisor and a certified sex therapist, reflecting the depth and specialization of our clinical services. Our administrative team includes a master’s-level mental health counselor who is currently in her first year of a PhD program in linguistics, as well as an undergraduate administrator. We also offer internship opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students pursuing careers in psychology and mental health, as mentorship and professional development are central to our mission.

What started as a single step toward ownership has grown into a sustainable, Black woman-led practice that supports both clients and clinicians with intention and integrity. I’m proud of how thoughtfully the practice has evolved and remain deeply committed to its continued growth, leadership, and impact in the community.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road and I don’t believe it’s meant to be. One of the earliest challenges was unlearning the idea that I needed everything to be perfect before starting. As a Black woman building a practice, I also had to navigate systems that were not designed with me in mind, including limited access to business mentorship and institutional knowledge.

A major learning curve came with understanding managed care systems earning how insurance, reimbursement, and credentialing actually work, and how to advocate for timely and appropriate payment while still centering client care. Developing and enforcing private practice policies, holding boundaries with clients, and balancing accessibility with sustainability were all ongoing challenges.

As the practice grew, I had to shift from thinking solely as a clinician to leading as a business owner managing finances, hiring and supervising staff, and holding responsibility for a team. About six years into the practice, another layer of complexity emerged as I began intentionally developing A New Creation Psychotherapy into a training practice. That required building supervision structures and integrating a holistic, mind-body-spirit framework into clinical training while still meeting professional and ethical standards.

There were also periods of collective stress and high demand that tested sustainability and burnout. Those challenges forced me to slow down, build stronger systems, and lead with clarity rather than urgency. Every struggle refined the vision—shaping a practice that is grounded, integrative, and built to last.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about A New Creation Psychotherapy Services LLC?
A New Creation Psychotherapy is a holistic, trauma-informed mental health practice rooted in the understanding that healing does not occur solely at the level of the mind. While we respect traditional clinical frameworks, our work intentionally moves beyond symptom management to address the root of suffering, how individuals relate to their inner experience, consciousness, and sense of self. We do not view the mind and spirit as separate. In our approach, thoughts are understood as clouds and emotions as weather temporary experiences that arise and pass through awareness rather than defining who a person is. The work is not about controlling or fixing thoughts and emotions, but about learning to rest in the awareness beyond the mind. This is what we refer to as third-order change a shift in being, not just thinking or behavior.

At the same time, we are deeply trauma-informed and understand that safety, trust, and pacing are essential for healing. We place strong emphasis on the therapeutic relationship as a central vehicle for change. Many of the individuals we work with have experienced relational, developmental, or systemic trauma, and healing occurs through consistent, attuned, and respectful connection. The relationship itself becomes a space where regulation, repair, and new ways of being can emerge. We are known for offering therapy that is depth-oriented, relational, and consciousness-based, integrating emotional, somatic, relational, and spiritual dimensions of healing. Our work often resonates with people who have “done therapy before” but are seeking something that goes beyond insight or coping strategies and supports lasting internal freedom.

What I am most proud of, brand-wise, is our integrity. A New Creation Psychotherapy is clear about who we are and how we work. We offer a space where clients and clinicians alike can engage in healing that is grounded, attuned, and expansive supporting not just change, but transformation in how one lives, relates, and experiences themselves. What I want readers to know is this: this is not therapy that asks you to manage yourself better. It is therapy that invites you to heal at the root, to feel safe enough to unfold, and to live beyond the mind with greater presence, freedom, and self-trust.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that how you lead matters as much as what you build and that leadership doesn’t require doing everything alone. Early on, I believed strength meant carrying it all myself. Over time, I learned that delegation, trust, and shared responsibility are what create sustainability and growth.
I’ve also come to understand the power of leading with grace and collaboration rather than control. When leadership is embodied rather than imposed, it creates space for others to rise. I see my role as supporting the development of queens and kings helping people step into their own authority, confidence, and leadership through the embodiment of my own grounded leadership. This philosophy has shaped the culture of A New Creation Psychotherapy Services. By modeling alignment, integrity, and presence, I’ve watched team members grow into themselves rather than shrink to fit a hierarchy. That kind of leadership doesn’t just build a business, it builds people. Ultimately, the lesson has been this: true leadership isn’t about dominance or perfection. It’s about presence, collaboration, and creating conditions where everyone can thrive.
