Meet Toby Spencer of Southside (Fayetteville)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Toby Spencer.

Hi Toby, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was raised in the once-rural town of Senoia, Georgia. My father was a local police chief, and my mother was a stay-at-home mom. Growing up, I had dreams of going to college and getting my pilot’s license to follow in my grandfather’s footsteps as an airline pilot. After graduating high school, I spent a year working full time, saving up money for school. Life happened. My father passed away abruptly, and everything changed.

Instead of following in my grandfather’s footsteps, I ended up following my father’s out of necessity into law enforcement. I enjoyed a fruitful career in law enforcement, advancing from patrol to detective and later police sergeant. However, after a failed marriage and seeing myself as not the person I had hoped to be, I knew something must change.
Even though I knew the Lord as a teenager, I will admit that I did not truly come to know God until everything had fallen apart. After spending a lot of time with the Lord and in scripture, I became the person I wanted to become many years ago. I felt God calling me to do something greater in my life, and I enrolled in seminary at Liberty University.

Now, several years later, I have the honor of serving as pastor of Ebenezer Church, a historic church in Fayetteville, Georgia. A church that has stood on Ebenezer Church Road since 1883. Additionally, God opened two other doors that still have me awestruck: serving as both partnership coordinator for the Fellowship of Christian Airline Personnel (FCAP) and a chaplain at the world’s busiest airport, Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

Although the reality of becoming a pilot like my grandfather never took flight, I can work around airplanes and help inspire the next generation of aviators. I have been able to help create a youth aviation camp called Camp Soar Above, which gives the youth an opportunity to grow closer to Christ, but also take to the sky. In 2025, I also became a published author with my first book, Tainted, which deals with spiritual warfare.

The life I have lived has shaped me to be an inspiration and guide for others with the goal of being a light to others as called to do by Jesus in Matthew 5:14-16. Life is a challenge for the best of us. I hope to help others see the light that awaits them through following, The Lord Jesus Christ.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have dealt with various challenges in life besides the loss of my father as a young man. I am a poster child of ADHD and have to fight through the academic and life challenges that come with it. Additionally, I struggled with stress following time spent as a police officer. The vision of death and tragedy haunted me for many years. However, with a supportive wife and seeking help, I have been able to overcome. Often, men especially, try to fight battles alone. Yet, time and time again, we fail in those battles. Life will never be a completely smooth road, and I encourage everyone to know they are not alone. No one has to fight the battle as a single sentinel.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I wear many hats, all focused on ministry. I am the pastor of Ebenezer Church, Partnership Coordinator at the Fellowship of Christian Airline Personnel (FCAP), volunteer chaplain at Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, and a Christian author. In each of my roles, I can help others, which brings me joy.

As a pastor and chaplain, I can be there to help people in difficult times. I am a physical presence in times of crisis and hurt. At FCAP, I get to work with active airline employees and the next generation. It is a blessing to work with the youth and students; words cannot describe seeing the smiles on their faces when they get in the cockpit behind the controls for the first time.

I am an overcomer! I am proud that I have been able to deal with the challenges of ADHD to graduate with a master’s degrees in Christian Ministry and Education. I am proud that I have persevered through challenges to become who I am today. Aside from being the first in my family to attend graduate school and get degrees, I have also become the first published author in my family.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Working together is all about communication and developing relationships. I always strive to build relationships with everyone I work with. It is crucial to develop communication skills and to work together! I am all about teamwork, and that is what I strive to have in place with anyone that I work with. In order to successfully work with me, it is important to put ego aside and work together cooperatively to accomplish the goal at hand.
