Conversations with Caylin Sams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Caylin Sams.

Hi Caylin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I landed the lead role in a musical when I was in first grade. I went on to perform in high school musicals and danced competitively at Georgia College & State University. It wasn’t until 2017 that I fell in love with on-screen acting. They were filming The Originals in Milledgeville, Georgia. I was able to spend some time on set. It was painfully cold and just about everything that could go wrong on set was going wrong. It was miserable and amazing and I remember thinking, “where do I sign up?” So I started taking film acting classes and working on short films. I have since worked on many independent feature films and signed with East Coast Talent Agency.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Honestly, the film industry is rough. If anyone has found a smooth road to being a successful actor, please come find me and tell me the secret. But really, I can say with full confidence even though I haven’t “made it” yet, I am so thankful that the road has been filled with so many obstacles. It’s all just building blocks for the next step. The latest obstacle is the general lack of work. The film industry in Atlanta had been booming for a decade until Covid hit. After Covid and the strikes, many production companies moved to the UK because it’s much cheaper to film there right now. No one knows when the industry will return to Atlanta, but I can either spiral in self-doubt and quit, or I can keep going. I’m choosing to work on myself in this slow season so that I’m prepared for what’s next. I’ll keep going as long as this little light keeps burning in me. It’s been there since that musical I was in in first grade so I don’t anticipate it dying out anytime soon.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an actor based in Atlanta. I was part of a feature film last year called Cavegirls. I played a leading lady, John Wick-esque character. It hasn’t released yet, but I really learned so much from that set. I trained for six months at Dog House Boxing Club and Virtual Bodies preparing for the film. I also worked with stunt professionals in Atlanta learning how to do action sequences on screen. People recommend surrounding yourself with people who are more talented than you. My performance in the film is thanks to so many artists who are leaps and bounds better than I am at their craft. It’s such a treat to be able to learn from the masters and gain an ounce of their skills. I am so proud of everything the cast and crew of Cavegirls was able to pull off. I am also proud of the discovery within myself of what I am capable of. It’s just the beginning.

I’ve recently been part of Nightmarish TV’s micro horror anthology on social media. The network is ran by Jaime Lucero Jr. and Madison Hoover. They are both so talented and I’ve been constantly enamored by the films they are creating. I highly recommend checking them out and supporting their work.

Any big plans?
Two of my big dreams are making my own films and owning a venue. I certainly hope to work towards making those dreams a reality this year. It’s going to take a lot of research and planning, but I know it’ll come together somehow. I want to create a space at the venue to offer community art classes. I enjoy taking painting classes at local art studios. I just signed up for water color classes with an amazing artist and friend, Sanaz Dillard. I am so excited to look forward to that for the next few weeks. I feel like anything is possible when I’m expressing myself through painting, acting, dancing or fashion. It scratches an itch in my brain that nothing else can. My hope for the venue is to curate a space that inspires people to go out into the world and make it a better place. I’d also use the property to film my own movies. Full circle!
