So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have always been a huge fan of YouTubers, and it was always a dream of mine too, one day, have a channel of my own. For years, I kept this dream to myself due to self-doubt and the fear of what others might think of me. It was not until after I had my second child, that I realized it’s important to set the example for my children of always pursuing your dreams no matter how big, small or scary they may be. I started the beauty and fashion YouTube channel, Halsey Is My Real Name, about one year ago. Through hard work and consistent uploading my channel has steadily grown and has been mentioned in numerous publications including, Allure, Business Insider, Fox News, Cosmo, and Teen Vogue. I remain very motivated and optimistic about the future of my channel.
Has it been a smooth road?
Honestly, the hardest part of this journey was getting started. In the beginning, I knew nothing about proper filming, background, film editing, or marketing my self and my videos. There was quite a bit of trial and error. Now, I feel as comfortable in front of the camera as I am talking to a friend. If anyone is thinking about starting a YouTube channel my advice would be, throw yourself right in immediately! Stop overthinking it and don’t worry about small details. These are crucial learning moments that can not be taught. They can only be learned through hands-on experiences. One of my biggest regrets is that I didn’t start my channel sooner. The best advise I can give other women is to stay true to yourself and throw yourself into what you love, whatever it may be. We can be stronger than we often give ourselves credit for.

It has been a journey discovering what my brand is. In the competitive world of YouTube and beauty, you have to have something that sets you apart from others. I find that I get the best response from my viewers when I give my honest unfiltered opinion. I think people are searching for something real and can tell when you are being disingenuous. I review makeup and beauty products and teach on my channel but I also like to call something out when it doesn’t seem right, no matter what that product or brand may be. I see many makeup gurus that will tell their followers anything to buy a product, just so they can make money. I value my subscribers. What I do is based on trust and would never destroy this trust by compromising my credibility.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
My mind never stops thinking of ways to better my channel and attract more subscribers. I have an album on my phone and when I see something that inspires me such as places, pictures, makeup looks or youtube thumbnails I snap a screenshot of it and keep it in a folder. It is a folder I ofter revisit when I am thinking of new ideas or inspiration. It is actually one of my favorite things to do and it allows me to be creative. It is very fulfilling to have the freedom of creativity to do whatever I want with my channel.
