Today we’d like to introduce you to Kia Hawkins.
Hi Kia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey started as a direct support professional working as a life coach for an adult day program. I encountered a case manager that would come to the program to check for compliance. She inspired and encouraged me to apply for a position at her job. I did and within a year I received a promotion as a mentor training new case managers in the field. I remained there for approximately 8 years until I got an offer from an outside agency to become a director for a major agency within the developmental disabilities field. After 3 years of building another person’s dream, I decided it was my time to start on my own dream. I prayed and sought answers from God who guided every step. What started with 5 individuals quickly became over 40.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has not been easy. I have lost friends along the way. Family members thought I was crazy for leaving a 6 figure job to go to the unknown. It was a gamble to most but I knew what the Lord called me to do. I also had a previous boss discourage me from having the same title she carried, owner/CEO.

Intellectual Concepts of Georgia is an agency that provides services for adults with developmental disabilities. We offer a day program Monday through Friday where we work on enhancing social, community, and independent learning skills. We provide field trips in the community 3 days out of the week and 2 days out of the week we focus on core skills such as independent learning skills (cooking, laundry, hygiene, etc.), job readiness skills, social skills, volunteer work in the community, and etc.
We also provide transportation to and from your home. We service areas from Douglasville to Acworth.
What sets us apart is that I have previous experience as a case manager therefore I am able to walk families through the financial process and answer any questions or concerns about waivered services. There is also a LPN on site to assist with nursing needs.
Our staff provide overnight respite care to all of our families in need of a break and or vacation.
Lastly, we provide a 1:1 mentorship program to assist our individuals in discovering new places and tackling obstacles in the community such as making purchases, attending concerts, interacting with the public, learning public transportation, and etc.
Intellectual Concepts of Georgia focuses on enhancing the lives of others with a focus on inclusion and providing top notch care. Our goal is to ensure our individuals have voices and are seen as equal as anyone else in their community.

Most people who know me know how passionate I am about helping others and ensuring their visions are pursued. I offer consultation to those who have hearts for bettering the services and supports offered to those with developmental disabilities.
