Today we’d like to introduce you to WHITNEY LYONS.
Hi WHITNEY, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Dr. Whitney “Elle” Lyons and I am a Gulf Coast Mississippi native who moved to Georgia after Hurricane Katrina. While in MS, I was always enamored with the idea of a career in healthcare. The amalgamation of science and service to the community was intriguing to me. While I originally was interested in cardiology or obstetrics, I attended the SEEP program at the Medical College of Georgia, and I instantly fell in love with dentistry. After college, I attended the Medical College of Georgia for dental school and then I attended the University of Alabama in Birmingham for my pediatric residency. I have now been a dentist for over a decade and have practiced in the North Atlanta suburbs for the past 8 years. In December of 2023, I opened my own dental practice, Blossom Pediatric Dentistry, in Suwanee, GA. While there is more pressure when you own the practice, having the ability to control all aspects of the patient experience makes it worth it!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Opening a dental office comes with its fair share of challenges. Some of the challenges that we encountered were permitting and certificate of occupancy delays, flooding in the waiting room, back ordered dental equipment, and even running out of working capital before seeing our first patient. Each struggle felt insurmountable, but I learned that I must keep pushing forward. We aren’t the first office to experience these things, and we won’t be the last. Social media can make it seem like everyone is thriving. Ones highlight reel may look amazing, but there are a lot of nights when you have to check your doubt and remember why you started this journey in the first place.
We’ve been impressed with Blossom Pediatric Dentistry, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My Business is Blossom Pediatric Dentistry. We provide dentistry to children from the ages 0-18 in a boutique style office. We offer a plethora of services including exams, cleanings, white fillings, crowns, minimally invasive dentistry, and even IV sedation. We are known for our calming environment and for taking our time to get to know each of our patient families. In the current state of healthcare, it is rare to be able to spend more than a few minutes with the doctor; thus, we are very proud to provide more meaningful visits with our patient families. Our business has just celebrated two years, and we have already been nominated and won several awards. We are ecstatic to see what the future holds.
What makes you happy?
Professionally, seeing my patients have fun at the dentist makes me incredibly happy. Because we have a spa like environment, many patients with special needs and anxiety try out our office. It is a special moment to see a child transition from being fearful to being excited about returning. It is also incredibly rewarding to see our patients grow up and to hear about their achievements and goals in life. Personally, what makes me happy is spending quality time with my family and friends. I grew up in a beach town, so I feel restored when I’m at the beach. I also love being transported to a new place via traveling and reading books.
